He is world class.

Anyone who produces those stats over two seasons in the Premier League (for a pretty average team) is world class.

If your bar is set by turning up in the biggest games then is a goal in the Euros final a good start?
Fair enough about the goal in the Euro final but it’s way too early to say he’s world class. Maybe your definition is different to mine?

Feel free to bounce this in a few years time.

He’s been one of the best in the world for almost two full seasons including influencing a huge international tournament so I’m describing him as “world class” at the moment (last two games not included 😁).

Fair enough if you want him to sustain that for longer. Chelsea will have to sort themselves out though as he can’t carry them forever.

Regardless of our personal definitions, he’s definitely a whole lot better than “slightly above average” 😆

England need to build the team around him.

I heard a stat from my chelsea supporting work colleague that (prior to last night) since end Oct he has created 31 chances for his team mates of which only 1 has been converted.

It seems that it's not his levels dropping but those around him. He ended up coming deep for the ball last night because he simply can't trust anybody else in the team. He is a generational talent playing in a mediocre team
I think the loss of Jackson has been huge for Chelsea (and Palmer).

I don't really disagree with your point, but 12 of those 39 goals being penalties is quite a large caveat.
Interesting. So he’s got 27 non-pen goals in 2 seasons and his goals against top 6 clubs are not great.

I stand my “slightly above average” statement.

As much as I despise Chelsea, it’s undeniable that Palmer is an exceptional talent. As even their own fans admit, they got lucky with him. He was bought as a last-minute, almost panic buy after Nkunku was injured in a pre-season friendly. He cost £40m and was seen as a pretty random punt.

A few months earlier, I thought he looked like a great young player when he came on for City at the Amex in the Enciso wonder-goal game. There was some chat on here about whether he was worth going for, if I remember right, with a range of opinions.

He’s one of the most instinctive footballers I’ve ever seen. He can just glance up and stroke a pass into a channel for a player who hadn’t even realised a channel existed for them. He sees opportunities without having to think. A bit like Gazza. A total natural. I’d love it if his current frustration led him to a more deserving club though it would be annoying to see Chelsea get the £100+ million they could demand.

Exceptional player, tore us apart earlier this season. But had a bad game last night, along with everyone else.

Including Palmer, their body language and attitude on the pitch was terrible. That has to be a worry for them.

Am I bothered? No.

I’d love to know what him and Jack Hinshelwood were saying to each other after we scored in the second half and Palmer was waiting take the kickoff. Seemed quite juicy.

I'm not sure he had a bad game. Our tactics forced the game into the middle of the pitch and removed the space where he likes to drift or slide in passes.

Effectively, FH negated him rather than him personally having a bad game. This was evident as he ended up playing deeper and deeper looking for the ball.

He looks frustrated with all around him, not surprised really as most of them are bog standard.

Really good post, but personally, I think he’s in the great but not world class category. Definitely opinions, just think he goes missing for periods of games, Gazza (using your example), was never anonymous for such long periods.

Definite talent though, apparently bit of an attitude, but not always a bad thing, I mean who likes losing?

Foden or Palmer, I’d probably go Foden, but ideally both. In both cases as has been evident being surrounded by other good players helps enormously.

I also think he’s great rather than world class at the moment. He needs to be playing CL football & if Chelsea miss out on that this season I can see him looking for a move. Interesting dilemma because Chelsea will demand stupid money for him but the player wanting to leave could upset the apple cart.

He’s not a striker. Scoring all those (non penalty) goals from the position he plays for an average team is ridiculous output.

Far more than most teams’ dedicated main strikers.

You’re also ignoring all the assists.

Plus add in the fact that he took it upon himself to become the penalty taker (as an inexperienced new signing) and since then he hasn’t missed one.

That says it all about his elite mentality.

“Slightly above average“ 😂

I know you like him, and that’s fine. I agree he’s good, great at times. But I think we have very different views of what world class means. I need to see a lot more, and see it regularly.

I’ll also add I’m of an age where I have seen plenty of players arrive on the scene to a big world class fanfare, build an England team around them etc, to then stagnate. e.g. Jack Grealish.

That’s better. It was the “slightly above average” comments I had an issue with.

You don’t need to be much of an age to remember the Jack Grealish “era” 😂 it was around the time of the Euros in 2021 !

I’ve seen a lot of players come and go too. Just think Palmer is pretty special.

Agree he needs to do it for longer but some of the things he’s already done in his first two seasons as a senior player are “world class”.

The four goals in a half against us for a start - that had never been done before by any other player (including the ones that everyone agrees are world class!).
