They have a trade deficit because people in the US want to buy stuff made in the EU, and people are less interested in what the US make. That's it.

If they want to reduce the deficit then make better stuff.

Trump's efforts on trade kind of remind me of DEI hiring. It wasn't earned but he'll force it to happen.

this isnt about trade deficits. its about other issues, just heard White House economics diector say it's a drug war not a trade war. they want Canada and Mexico to do more, or at least say they will, on border control. thats the "win" condition for Trump.

It's complete nonsense in respect to Canada though. Less than 1% of drugs crossing the border are through Canada. Also, there's no crisis for people trying to get across the border. If anything, people are trying to escape the US to Canada. It's their border too, if they want to tighten it up then they should add more security on their side of the border. Canada controls the Canadian border, not the US border.

He's pretending it's about security. It really isn't.

What disqualifies you from entering Canada?

Reasons for Criminal Inadmissibility

Foreign nationals can be refused entry to Canada if they were convicted of a crime stemming from a misdemeanor arrest or for more serious crimes, such as felony convictions.

Trump won't be going to Ottawa any time soon. That's for sure.

It would be quite something if countries stopped trump visiting on the basis of being a convicted criminal. Imagine the meltdown here from the right if we did it. I would love to then reply “so do we or do we not want to control our borders to stop convicted criminals from overseas”

Dangerous times as he won’t take it lightly. MAGA control America. They could do a Putin.

Oddly, we might actually be able to see THE FIRST EVER BREXIT BENEFIT!!!

As a relatively independent trading country, we can negotiate a "good deal" with the US, and negotiate in isolation for the UK with EU on cross-European trade.

Trump's issue is that he has a perceived "bad deal" with the EU. As long as we don't join any trade agreement with the US as part of the bloc, we might get away with it.
Yea it looks like it took a fascist in the Whitehouse to get one.

But yes a Brexit benefit is possible in theory

Agreed.

However, do you think it would be better if Trump had singled out the UK and Starmer as a special case of disgrace (like he has for the EU), and that Starmer had told the EU to f*** off WRT future arrangements?

Well, I can imagine that the Brexit monkeys would love the latter (while describing it as "Too Near Kier" or some-such shite). What about the former?

You know the story about the tent and the man who needs to urinate I take it?

Of course, if Corbyn were PM he'd be telling Trump and the EU to f*** off.
And if Sunk were still PM he'd . . . actually I have no idea what he'd be doing. Nothing, most likely.
Sunak - Hedging his bets, I guess!

Somewhat dependant on little old Britain negotiating some sort of trade deal with the Orange Bunglcunt and the biggest economy in the world which would benefit Britain.

Good luck with that

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is currently giving her morning news conference, in which she is detailing the phone call with Trump that appears to have led to today's agreement.

The Mexican government clearly sees this as a victory. Sheinbaum's appearance began with applause after she asks those in attendance whether they'd seen her social media post on X.

According to Sheinbaum, the conversation with Trump was "long", lasting perhaps 30 or 45 minutes.

Imagine the meltdown if cars became usd3000 more expensive in the US

Anyway soon they’ll have cheaper Chinese cars made in Mexico.

saw a graph earlier, something like 30-35% of "American" cars - Ford, GM, etc, are actually made in Mexico.
