I think we can all agree that the British do these things in a far more grand and spectacular manner. This sounds like a fairground from the 1960's. No history or sense of pageantry.

Well at least we don't have to listen anymore when they go on about how much better they are than the rest of us....

America as a country and culture is forever stained by this election. It's spent two centuries lecturing the world about the American Dream - meritocratic values, freedom and opportunity for all who wish to better themselves, under-pinned by a belief in democratic institutions and the rule of law. Turns out that if you have enough money and power, political & corrupt justices will ignore or remove the legal barriers that would have prevented a seditionist, convicted criminal and court confirmed sex offender from running for the highest office. Then the country will have no problem voting him in.

Who would ever be able to take it seriously were they to make another 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington'? 'All the President's Men'? '12 Angry Men'? , 'Erin Brockovic'? even 'Home Alone'? All those WWII films? All those Westerns? All those Superhero films? All those teen comedies where the underdogs defeat the rich bullies? The bleedin' West Wing!! Their film and TV culture has been crammed with works of art that celebrate how America uniquely allows the little person, against all of the odds, to defeat an all powerful and corrupt foe. This result is proof that enough of them are willing to sell all of these celebrated ideals for just the hope and promise of a bit of short term extra cash. They've voted to put the bully in charge of the ski resort; to support the outlaws attacking the farmer's village; for a stronger policeman who will ensure that Rick can't help Laszlo and Ilsa to get on that plane.

The country has completed ceded any moral highground it ever had. The World's longest standing democracy has confirmed that it's democratic values have always taken second place behind it's materialistic values. America is, and always has been, Gordon Gecko in Shane's clothing and anytime in the future that they pretend otherwise, the rest of the world can just play it's Trump card.

Christianity was created to glorify poverty so people wouldn't demand the same luxuary as their rulers. Hollywood movies show people that you have a one in a million chance of doing a class journey so there's no need to change power/wealth distribution in society or demand the same luxuary as the rulers - because its all obtainable according to the messages sent from Hollywood.

"We can try to understand the New York Times effect on man". But it ain't easy.

Nowadays people watch more of this shit than ever while their opportunities are worse than ever.

Increasingly glossy dreams along with increasingly barren realities results in nihilsm, and it is the nihilists that have put Trump in power.

Nihilism isn't the funny, edgy emo-pop shit people think it is, it one of the most dangerous "philosophies" because it doesn't believe in any human values. If the nihilist is angry, he wants the world to burn, not to fix it, because he doesn't think it can be fixed, because in his mind there's nothing worth fixing. Occupy Greenland, execute whoever you want, put the entire world at war... many many Trump supporters long for this.

Nihilism struggles with beating progressive values. But as seen in most Western communities today, progressive movements are stuck in the state of anomie, which may develop into more nihilism or a real bloody clash of values between the nihilists disappointed that Hollywood isn't real and the naive, who think it is.

f*** me, now I'm in politics again... gonna ban myself from the thread. Hopefully didn't step on too many toes with the above.

As someone on here posted on election day. A lot Americans couldn’t give a shit as long as their gas gets cheaper and they can have a takeaway the size of Belize for $9.99.

Trump attitude to climate change is the real killer, millions will suffer in the developing world in decades to come. It’s a crime that sadly he will never be punished for…
