I'm not one for getting on the backs of people who can't make away games when it's so expensive to follow a Premier League team around the country but let's not have any more of this 'best fans in the country' shite. Even Naylor was pimping that a while back.

Is away support anything to do with distance to home ground? I know it sounds stupid, but we have to organise our trips to the Amex with trains, buses and monorail whilst most EPL clubs are in the town centre so getting to a game is easy.
Big away followings are Newcastle, 1000's from London - Liverpool, 1000's from everywhere - Man Utd, all from outside Manchester.
You understand what I'm getting at.
Seagull Travel pick up from Worthing, Eastbourne and Haywards Heath both home and away.

Also can't believe people are defending palace on here saying it's January or it's hard for them to get to games. It's FAR easier to get to away games from London than it is from Sussex. We will have a full allocation at Ipswich again tonight and I imagine thats a bugger to get to from Worthing or Brighton.

Yeah that's true, but a lot of us are also supporting kids and paying bills.

I would say the proportion of younger fans at away games is probably slightly higher than home games

Well your mates might be telly porkies as I have been a ST holder since 2000 and very rarely have enough points to go to most away games….even though last night and West Ham on Saturday. It must also be considered it was live on TV.

Not according to the stats, this is last season.

Away games really pinpoint how well supported clubs are when playing on the road. The 2023/24 season highlights some interesting points:

  • Luton Town surprisingly tops the away attendance chart with an average of 40,326. This could be attributed to their unique journey back to the top flight, which has drawn significant attention.
  • Crystal Palace (39,471) and Burnley (39,394) follow closely, demonstrating strong away support despite not being among the league’s traditional giants.
On the lower end, clubs like:

  • West Ham United (37,019),
  • Manchester United (37,223),
  • Tottenham Hotspur (37,651),
  • Arsenal (37,681) have slightly lower average away attendance figures.

I don't think so. If you take Brighton, when I was first going away in the late 80s / early 90s we used to take about 150 / 200 up north and 95% of them would be the same people most weeks. London typically 1000 - 1500. We took a good proportion away for the league we were in from the gory days. Either people protesting, huge games like Hereford, or, later, because people preferred aways to Gillingham. Then we were suddenly 'big fish' in League 2 under DK. I can remember us taking over 500 to Darlington in League 2 and me being seriously worried about getting in our end.

Since then we've had a good away support. Probably easier to get tickets in the Championship but big away ends would always sell out. 3000 at Charlton for one of Hughton's first games in a grim season and probably 6000 odd at Fulham with the neutral end and 7000 away at MK Dongs. And we still sell out most of our away allocations today, albeit sometimes the club take a smaller one - for example at Newcastle. Still over 2k there though.

So we've gone from basically a meeting place for the same 100 or so lunatics to a much debated points system in around 35 years.

This looks like nonsense. Arsenal , spurs and man u would sell out every away game.

End of the day you had massive empty spaces at villa and Leicester. There really is no excuse to only take 800 to Leicester when the away tickets are 30 quid and the train takes less than 2 hours.

Same here. Now that I’m retired, I can easily go to midweek away games. Usually stop over and make a little break out of it. But If I had to be at work next morning, I would never consider it.

It's not nonsense. It's because they are the teams with the smallest away ends and they can't go in their own away end. Bournemouth would be less despite the small away end because they really are tinpot.

My mates definitely aren't telling porkies.

The stats you are quoting are quite confused.
It looks like that is the average attendances at away games. Not the average attendance of travelling fans.

This is why Luton and Palace are at the top.
Their smaller grounds mean that their attandances aren't included in their away attendances.

The clubs with the bigger capactieis are at the bottom

I'm slightly older than you in that my early days are on the Seagull Special train. Also, back in those days, how did we buy tickets? Were they sold at the ground on match days? Remember queueing for Cup Final tickets there (Goldstone). Cant remember much of those 70's days (sneaking beer onto the train) but these days the 3000 consists of maybe 2000 who go to most games and I recognise most of them.
Remember MK Dons. Was it cheap tickets for entry and travel or something? Another club took even more than us a week or so before.

Not sure about travel but tickets were dirt cheap for MK.
