Are these people Russians who were living in Mariupol, wanting independence from Ukraine and waiting for the Russian army to come and liberate them?

Not sure if you're joking or not. Presumably they are Ukrainians.

"We were waiting for Russia and believed that we would not be abandoned." - hence the very legitimate question; Russia had deliberately peppered eastern Ukraine and Crimea with ethnic Russians in order to justify their claim to be liberators, had they not?

Fair enough, I understand your question now.

According to the central bank of Russia, today was the last bank holiday of the Christmas season in Russia.

Whether that means that the free market will kick in tomorrow, or on Monday, or if the restriction in trading foreign currency will be lifted, and/or there will be more trading in rubles, remains to be seen. Which is another way of saying 'I know nothing'.

Except that the bank has been steadily buying rubles to move the price down from 113.75 on 31 Dec to 102.75 today. They're worried.

I'm only 15 minutes in but he's an interesting guest speaker. Just be patient getting past the few minutes waffle at the beginning.

Very interesting if a bit depressing. Seems to be back to 1914, lions led by donkeys both in western Europe & Ukraine. Still suggests a complete fail of west to understand Putin or Russia & until we do war will not end. Not helped by lunatic Trump who seems to be trying to model himself on Putin demanding other countries territories while looking to be isolationist.

More nice stuff.

Blimey.

I wonder if we have Russia's defiance and belligerence to thank for these precisely targeted sanctions? Would they have happened at all if Russia had been making the right noises as we approach the peace talks?

I also wonder if this was done with Trump's agreement. I guess if he kicks off, or stays quiet about it, we will have our answer in either case.

Yes indeed, I was thinking the same...was Trump's team consulted? quite likely I'd say. If so, then Trump is putting more difficulties in Putin's path, perhaps so they're on the table for the negotiations 🤔, if they happen?

Mariupol always did have a decent % of ethnic Russians living there as right on border. As a city it was a mix of ethnic Ukrainians, ethnic Russians and a large Greek diaspora.

Though no idea who these people are...... but anyone putting any trust in Putin is an idiot....... they probably sit there feeding on Russian state TV and have no idea who the real enemy is.

Maybe you're right, but it's difficult to imagine they didn't work out who the enemy was when Ukrainian soldiers were stationed there and the Russians were flattening the city.
