[Politics] The Labour Government

The last couple of days are a good reminder of why Labour's energy policy needs some work. The wind hasn't been blowing enough and the sun isn't shining enough, so even in this low demand part of the day 63% of our electricity (about 27GW) is coming from gas fired power stations.

Just under 8% of our electricity is coming from wind, hydro or solar. :(

The wind was very strong yesterday. Even wearing a woolly scarf and waxed raincoat couldn’t keep the cold out.
My solar panels are still generating an odd watt or two, even though it’s nearly dark with cloud cover. Don’t be so quick to write off Green energy.

Thanks for this, and I also go along with the contribution from @sussex_guy2k2
To illustrate this, we've got a small business owner whose wife works in the NHS and, on the basis of what he's been told, has come to the conclusion that many of the staff are off sick. We have someone else saying that they agree with this, yet go on to speak about senior managers, waste, etc (which in my view is something entirely different) but again based on what someone has told them.

There might be some stats supporting these views, and I'd offer that these would be more trustworthy sources.
Many people in the NHS suffer from stress, which affects their sickness record. I mean real stress not just a bit depressed. One of the GPs in my local surgery stood in front of a train a few years ago.

Also, by definition, many NHS staff are dealing with sick people, so are more likely than most other professions to be affected by contagious diseases and viruses incurred from their patients.

you’re on here saying everyone who ever coughs or sneezes should stay off work? 🙄
But you don't know why the people who rang in sick to you were ringing in sick, do you,
because you didn't let them finish their sentence 📞.

You say that BBassic's post doesn't describe you, but that really is how you came across. My guess is that you're not really like that, but you wanted to make a point ;)

FWIW I think that calling in sick due to a self-induced hangover is not acceptable. Should take a day's leave or work an extra shift another time.

I'm not (and didn't), I'm just not blind to it's shortcomings.

My house has been running off of the batteries since we got up this morning, with an average 100W contribution from the panels.

Having switched to Octopus Agile for electricity import I'm very aware of how electricity prices vary throughout the day, and why.

Keep an eye on the website I linked earlier, it clearly shows the significant contribution that renewables already make when the conditions are favourable.

Like I said before- I know my guys. And every time Sicknote Shaun rang in sick …I cut him off … everytime Bullshit John rang in sick I cut him off - Old Billy the same, Polish Andrew the same (Polish Andrew used to turn up for his 8 hour shift with an open packet of fags and two full packs of 20 every single day - minimum number of fag breaks he’s expecting is 22 right?) …. There you go, that’s all you know about Polish Andrew - now what do you think when he phones in sick 2 hours after his Saturday 6am shift started???

Rob the other foreman turned up once at changeover with his face out like a cricket ball with an abscess on his tooth - so I sent him home and worked his shift straight after mine. He was genuinely grotesque to look at that day but there he was, on time ready to try and work.

He's run out of fags?

No idea who that guy is but I know exactly who my guys are👍

On the shift I run now we have a workload that we have to complete every shift … if all 4 of us are there, we finish in a reasonable time… if we are 1 short we will all work 2 or 3 hours overtime and may not get everything done.

Any one of us is guaranteed to turn up if we have the sniffles … or if we have a tickly throat or a headache etc etc etc. Anyone doesn’t turn up you 100% KNOW they are ill, in fact there really wouldn’t be any need to explain because our work ethic and integrity is beyond question.

Yet the dozens and dozens of people who regularly called in sick for me in the past, nothing would convince me they are genuinely ill.

If you hate my attitude, imagine what I think of yours

The good news for you is that Angela Raynor thinks it’s ok for anyone to go sick on their first day of employment. The conversations we’ve had at work between myself and Pompey Stevo and the boys about this basically revolve around the question, “Who the **** thinks that’s a good idea ?”
No one’s talking about having the sniffles. You’re trying to prove a point by being condescending but the reality is you’re making yourself look stupid.

But that’s fine. Put the job and company profits over your team’s health. You’re such a hero.

Sounds like you are working for the wrong bosses there - because none of that describes me …

there are a lot of people who think it’s ok to call in sick because they were out on the piss the night before, are hungover and didn’t get enough sleep…🤔

you’re on here saying everyone who ever coughs or sneezes should stay off work? 🙄
You’re literally the boss that no one wants to work for. You sit here complaining about the people calling in sick - I imagine many of them are doing it because, quite frankly, they don’t want to spend a day putting up with your c**p.

A bit of self reflection would take you a long way.

Bloody hell, having read this (and your previous posts) it's a miracle you've got any employees at all. Who knows, maybe they take so much time off because of the culture created by their boss?

Chalk and cheese - nurses deal with sick people so are vulnerable to contagious or viral illnesses themselves, social workers deal with many 'difficult' and vulnerable children, so are prone to stress, the police suffer from stress and violence dealing with criminals, stabbings and serious/fatal road-traffic accidents, and teachers suffer from stress and burn-out due to a combination of disruptive/violent pupils, abusive or aggressive parents (often the parents of the delinquent pupils who don't value education), and the stress of the next OFSTED inspection.

The very nature of much public sector work means that the staff are especially susceptible to physical or mental health problems. They then have to endure the constant criticisms and sneering of smug people like you.

What's your excuse for being an unempathetic or ignorant ****?

Back then I wasn’t the boss …Old Billy used to walk around , cut corners and do as little as possible..and his catch phrase was in deep Geordie “I’m doing f*** all me!”

Sicknote Shaun and Bullshit John?? Well I would think their names would give you a hint of what kind of staff they were 😆 Shaun when he was given a job he didn’t want to do would sneak off and ring his missis to get her to ring the landline and ask for him because there was an emergency at home 🤨

Polish Andrew brings 40+ fags to work!!!

Tokyo Joe was even worse - he’d ring up and say I’m not coming in today and then hang up on me before I could hang up on him… no explanation just notification 😆😆

We are talking about the sniffles though aren’t we?

Call it the common cold if you like

How many scaffolders roofers brickies mechanics lorry drivers farmers etc etc etc are going to stay home and earn nothing because they have a cold? Very very few if any.

The condescending comments were the ones about coming to work to be a hero or to show what a big tough man you are really weren’t they.

One person’s sniffles can be another’s chest infection. Immunity can vary greatly.
Those who work outside, like your examples, rarely catch colds, whereas those who catch a bus to work, are then confined in a centrally heated office with 30 others are far more likely to succumb.

It‘s obvious you are having a laugh on this thread but generalisations and comparisons just don’t work.

Absolutely guaranteed truth. And there are sooooo many more where they came from!!

Polish Andrew actually lost his job spectacularly when he took holiday on the busiest week of the year when nobody was allowed holiday .. me Rob, Stevo, James would all take the opportunity to do 80+ hour weeks and get a full 40 hours overtime in 😎. Bullshit John would have the dentist, the doctors, the MOT, the kids are ill and everything you could imagine to not do any extra!!

Billy would say : …

And Polish Andrew was told under no circumstances could he have holiday that week and he was genuinely GOBSMACKED when he got sacked 😆

I have to say that when I was in business and had any teams or departments that had all the problems you have highlighted on here, I would be taking a good look at the manager of that department
