this is all creating so much drama. Why does footbal feel the need to offer itself up for all sorts of campaigns, Poppy's, rainbow laces, whatever next. Its football, either have the campaigns and allow for personal choice without question or don't involve it in the game.

Aren't footballers fined for showing political messages undershirts etc? So why force anyone to wear something they don;t agree with.

Yeah, same kind of logic that meant black players endured monkey chants for decades. It's not good for the game that promotes it's worldwide appeal as the 'People's Game' not to be inclusive to all people. You're in a bit of a bind if you're taking a position of not agreeing with all people being able to be involved in the game - i.e. discriminating. Football is not promoting a political message, it is basically promoting UK law.

I get your point you are trying to make but it kinda falls flat on this campaign. Doesn't help you resorted to "whatever next" which is akin to "theeeese days".

This campaign is about inclusion. Football is one of the last places where people still feel terrified of truly being who they are. Just look at the stats.

My first thought would be, if you were a player at Ipswich who was gay and was thinking "I think I should tell my teammates" then seeing your captain not wear a symbol of your acceptance is arguably massive. Same to fans etc. personally I'd have made someone else captain for the game and asked them to wear the armband.

Were you against anti-racism campaigns as well?

having followed football since the 70’s, there are plenty of reasons for football to show its penitence towards minority groups. Albion fans, of all fans, should also atleast get it.

no i wasn't against it and i supported it at the outset. However, like the premier league and the players themselves it was also tired of the symbolism which didn;t deliver anything.

While we have issues with inclusion in football like many other areas of life. I don;t think the forced approach is working. I think something more subtle driven by individual clubs and supported by the PL would be better. Getting players involved is only causing controversy which moves the subject on from what its supposed to do.

I do think it needs to be considered whether they continue as they are, change or have a complete embargo on anything opinionated outside of the actual game itself.

I totally agree. Either it is the word of God, or it isn't. I don't understand the idea that it was the word of God, but he keeps changing his mind on stuff to suit modern thinking. Is it or isn't it?

OK, I'll try again. I would have preferred him to refuse to wear them because football is about kicking a ball about and scoring goals and no place for pro-gay campaigns or anti-racist campaigns. Next thing footballers will be told they have to bring a pet onto the pitch in support of animal charities. Football matches are about football. That's quite sufficient thank you.

If football is just about kicking a ball about, why did so many fans throw fruit onto football pitches for several decades do you think? Why do fans still sing homophobic stuff if it's only the kicking of a ball that matters?

From everything I’ve leant about ‘historical’ Jesus (I believe he was a man not a god), I’d be shocked if he wasn’t gay along with all his adoring disciples. They were just kicking about 2,000 years ago being nice to people and looking for spaces to act normal without judgement from religious fanatics.

Maybe because these are still issues inside football grounds and clubs? From the video we saw on friday I'm sure Lewis Dunk will be very happy to wear a rainbow armband. I don't see colour very well, but I do like rainbow laces.

EDIT: SINGING! People always complain about the atmosphere. Well we won't need it at all in the new era. Singing, after all, does not involve a foot meeting a ball.

Is it? I thought it was just a conversation on a football forum :shrug:
The story dropped to way down the 'Premier League' page on the BBC Sport website, so hardly the biggest news of the past 24 hours, is it?

As for why football gets involved? Why not? Possibly because, given it's MASSIVE audience, the PL could actually end up doing some good by highlighting equality, inclusion and remembrance. I've not got any details of what difference these types of campaigns make, but I'm sure it has a positive effect on quite a few people – and also encourages wider conversations.

If you don't want to see it – or if you feel uncomfortable about it – I would argue that attitude is part of the wider problem. And no-one is forcing players to do anything. But, if they can't bring themselves to back a campaign that could potentially help fans of their own club – and cite 'religious beliefs' (come on, pull the other one, FFS?!) as the reason for your protest – that's pretty poor.

As I said earlier on, I couldn't care less what this guy does or doesn't do, but you've got to be some kind of arsehole to not want a fairer world with 'increased diversity', which is part of the whole rainbow laces campaign.

Imho football/sport has played a vital role in breaking down racism. Nothing specific, but a general evolution over the years "How can I hate black people if I adore that black player at out club".
