Think it means there will be no ruble (or rubble!) trading, hence freezing the price at its “notional” current value. No one can dispose of their rubles other than to buy goods and services using rubles (as opposed to exchanging rubles for other currencies), however only the most stupid will believe they are holding their value so prices will probably rise. When/if trading restarts there is likely to be a sudden fall in the ruble’s value unless economic conditions in Russia have improved….. not sure how!
Thanks Tim. Makes sense. So, a temporary stay of execution only really.

Europe was massively dependent on Russian gas, so it would have been self-harm at the time, especially for Germany. That's all changed now I believe, making these new sanctions a powerful weapon.

If it was about gas, I'm surprised it wasn't done after a winter, not just before one.

Which begs the question, why didn't they do it 2 years ago?
My guess is that the west didn’t want to go all out on the Russian economy in case there was a regime change in Russia and an non-economically trashed one would be easier to bring back into the international fold under a future leader.

I would imagine that with Putin still in place and his Bestest Bud about to become leader of the free world, the original game plan has gone out of the window.

It was lower at one stage - just after the war started.

Maybe Putin is hoping that Trump will help them in January, before they re-open?
Possibly, but anti Russia activity has been ramped up since Trump was elected causing as much damage as possible before Trump takes office.
