Very likely.
Less likely, but possible, is that Trump has softened them up a bit in readiness for his deal.

Which begs the question, why didn't they do it 2 years ago?

Europe was massively dependent on Russian gas, so it would have been self-harm at the time, especially for Germany. That's all changed now I believe, making these new sanctions a powerful weapon.
It can't be about escalation, it's just sanctions, not tanks and missiles. I've no idea on the others.
If it was about gas, I'm surprised it wasn't done after a winter, not just before one.
My guess is that the west didn’t want to go all out on the Russian economy in case there was a regime change in Russia and an non-economically trashed one would be easier to bring back into the international fold under a future leader.
I would imagine that with Putin still in place and his Bestest Bud about to become leader of the free world, the original game plan has gone out of the window.

Since when does Trump do anyone any favours? If Russia were to collapse and Putin disappear during his term, his ego would know no bounds …..
It's not about Trump wanting to do Putin a favour, but Trump helping himself may also help Putin. I have no idea what conversations they've had together.
Possibly, but anti Russia activity has been ramped up since Trump was elected causing as much damage as possible before Trump takes office.
