Which is mental....one player, one mistake (and let's be honest: the defence didn't cover themselves in glory for that Wolves goal either but nobody seems to flag that up)...anybody who gives him abuse or suggests he needs to redeem himself really needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

We gave the ball away countless times during that second half...you can't just call out the one that resulted in a goal. Bart screwed up for a goal against somebody recently but doesn't seem to have got nearly so much stick. This has all been utterly bizarre, and based entirely upon the sheer frustration we felt at not winning a game that we should have sewed up easily before that point.
Very well said, Lady W. Personally, i have a very good feeling about Mats and am optimistic that many people will be eating humble pie over the coming months.

Erm…there are even diagrams backing up the Wolves equaliser wasn’t just MW’s fault and plenty of posts echoing that.

Rutter has the advantage that he is already up to speed with the English game.
Funnily enough, I thought Rutter looked lost in his first couple of appearances.

But- who knew!- once he had game time and presumably realised he had the patience and trust of the manager, he's started to look like he really belongs in the PL, and just as importantly, he believes he belongs.

Wieffer probably would have started the season as a regular had he not got injured. As it stands, Baleba has come in, shone, and Wieffer has found it hard to get in the side since Everton.

He just needs and deserves exactly the same patience as any other player. I think he'll be really tidy once he gets up to speed.

Yes, from the rational people who are prepared to actually think about things.

But plenty of completely irrational bollocks from others, which is what irks me.

C’mon, I defended MW against that as well but we can’t pretend his poor pass wasn’t a strong contributing factor either.

The fact is he’s made quite a few mistakes and it’s fair enough for people to recognise that and be critical of it. It doesn’t make him an irredeemably bad player though, it’s just that he is taking time to get up to speed and to get going in this team. We need to hope that gets the game time to put it right, because not all players do.

He just needs time to get up to speed of PL - just remember Terrence Henry at Arsenal - shocking in his first 6months but did a reasonable job after that

I’d echo that, as fans we are allowed to criticise a performance but it’s a bit irrational when then spills over into getting rid of him when he’s barely played 300mins of football in England.

With the Ayari - Baleba partnership looking so good, it’s the manager he’s going to need to impress first and foremost, as unless suspensions / injuries come into play, can see his chances being limited for now.

Baleba is 20 and Ayari is 21 (only just)....so they won't play every game (Baleba's minutes are managed already). Weiffer will definitely get opportunities (he'll almost certainly come on as a sub for Baleba after about 70 minutes at Anfield, for example...).

Baleba's conceded two penalties this season. Those are mistakes, but he's not getting the same level of stick. Perhaps it's just recency bias, but I don't remember a load of people calling Baleba out.

I'm not saying Baleba deserves abuse, by the way, clearly not. Simply that Wieffer doesn't either.

Humans make mistakes, in fact every player in the squad makes them every single game. I bet Wieffer has made no more than anybody else out there. It's just that we generally forget about them unless they have an immediate and obvious consequence.

Come off it! Dozens of people have cited this excuse in defence of Wieffer- and dozens more disagree with them!

I think it's possible to be very unimpressed with a big signing which led to a good player leaving without him being an scapegoat

And it is fine to say that, even if other players were also at fault for goals, his mistakes were major contributors to them and he shouldn't be excused for criticism for that.

There are plenty of examples of players with way more cash in the bank with the Albion that have committed far less problematic errors and got it far worse than Weiffer is currently from the fans (Webster, Lamptey, Steele, Enciso to name but a few). I don't think it's scapegoating to say that a player who cost £25m+ should have impressed me a lot more at this juncture.

You could be unimprssed by some of his previous performances, but he was very good last night.

If he plays like he did last night in PL games with Baleba on song next to him, Brighton will do well in most games.

I've just done some diagrams showing that you like to use toothpicks to poke out kittens eyes for fun. So that means it true now, right?

He's played less than four hours PL football! I can think of plenty of expensive signings who took longer to adapt (Bissouma and Baleba for example, in defensive midfield).
