The judge:

"If NX121 is named, there is a risk that some may seek to obtain more details about him and to make threats to him or his family.
“However, in my judgment the naming the defendant or in giving his date of birth does not give rise to a real and immediate risk to his life.
“In contrast, in my judgment the lifting of all aspects of his identity might give rise to such risks, and so the order of this court will not permit the address of the defendant to be given in court.
“Secondly, the order will continue to prohibit any photographs, drawing, image or detailed description to be reported for the same reason as the address.”

I just cannot get my head round that. Name and DOB made public, but it'll all be ok, because his address won't be disclosed, and no pics.

Kinell.

I suspect they knew something like the bounty would happen.

If I was an armed officer this morning (thank god I'm not) I'd be handing by gun back in protest.

Literally every word you have said in this thread is pure nonsense. Continuing to ignore posters requests for fact checking and continuing to post absolute tosh.

Car not being a lethal weapon is one of the most ignorant things I’ve ever heard, not to mention the Police ‘creating the situation’ - would you like them to ignore an ANPR ping from a vehicle that was involved in a crime?

Troll.

Unfortunately the genie is out of the bottle on this one.

I wholeheartedly agree that there should be more regulation, and appointed Moderators should understand their important role on forums.

Elon Musk for example is an extreme example of someone with an important media outlet, who uses his political bias so strongly. Anyone who has strong leanings politically to the left, right or whatever, IMHO, is an unsuitable person to be a Moderator. I do wonder how he selects his Moderators on that forum.....? Is there any professionally recognised criteria required to be a Moderator for example on this forum ...?
I applied 20 years ago….I received a very polite refusal.

If anything happens to Martyn Blake as a result of that judge making his name public, then that judge will have blood on his hands, and should be punished for his APPALLING judgement.

Even if the firearms officer avoids physical harm as a result of having his name, age, rank made public, the on-going mental anguish and anxiety for his own safety and that of his family will be intolerable. I'm pretty certain too that the judge's decision will have far-reaching implications beyond just this case and will result in firearms officers nationwide deciding that the potential for ending up in a similar situation just isn't worth the risk to the safety of themselves or their family.

So far as I can see, the judge's blasé and carefree attitude regarding the security of an acquitted individual and the ramifications for policing in this country is inexcusable and inexplicable. For me, it's a 'resignation' issue.

The news reported that he delayed naming him so security could be put in place for Blake and his family.... so he knew this and still went ahead with it.

Rape of Hastings, Sussex
In The Times today. (Gibbs is Patrick Gibbs KC, for the defence)

Why was Blake’s anonymity lifted?

When the police marksman was charged in September last year, the media were notified that he would seek to preserve anonymity throughout the trial. At the time, he was known only as NX121. When a defendant first appears in court, they are asked to confirm their name, date of birth and address, a fundamental practice for suspects aged 18 and over.

Gibbs argued that this information being placed in the public domain would be a “catastrophe” and risked attracting the “vengeful determination” of Kaba’s criminal associates.

Gibbs said the threat to NX121’s life was “live and ongoing” although he conceded that open justice was an “extremely important consideration”.

Jude Bunting KC, the barrister instructed on behalf of the media, told the Old Bailey: “Everyone is equal before the law; an officer of the state has been charged with the murder of a citizen. No murder defendant has ever been anonymised in open court because of open justice.” Bunting also cited “a lack of evidence” to demonstrate that 67, a notorious street gang based in Brixton of which Kaba was a member, had taken steps to identify NX121.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the recorder of London, rejected the marksman’s application. In a written ruling, he said: “The naming [of] the defendant or the giving of his date of birth does not give rise to a real and immediate risk to his life.” He partially lifted an order to permit the media to report the officer’s name and date of birth.

It beggars belief. Truly it does.

The officer has faced trial and been found not guilty. Case closed. He should have been allowed to return to duty anonymously. What possible benefit or public interest is served by his name and service rank being disclosed?

Further, it may be that he will still face a misconduct charge.

As you said, if I were an Authorised Firearms Officer, I would seriously consider handing in my ticket.

It’s just been reported a 10k bounty has been placed on the Police Offices head.

Bloody hell! Another one?

(The link is correct - the description above of what it says is a glitch in the system)

I always listen to UK radio when I’m abroad (I am now in fact).……you can combine ‘radio’ and ‘internet’, it’s genius 👍😉

Thankyou. A revelation.

I occasionally listen to French radio if in the car but I'm not really a music fan.

I honestly had no idea I could do this. Have just found radio 4 which I used to enjoy many ears ago. Very useful to listen to, whilst working on insulating my home here.

If I said what I really think about that poster re the unsubstantiated inferences he’s making I‘d be banned…..still he seems to have a friend here
That's a very sly post.

The McNob chap is talking raging and absolute bollocks and is completely wrong. But if we banned everyone who did that we'd have six members left, the only thread left would be about the weather and even that would be on the edge.

I’ll stand by it thanks …I’m pretty sure I referred to myself as being banned and then went on to refer to “his friend here” followed by an article on Khan (his ‘friend’) 🤔

Think you’ve misunderstood

Ps currently lovely and sunny here in Portslade..

I can't see why the Moderator Guiness Boy called it a "sly post"....?

Not worth asking him personally of course but I expect his two groupies who follow him around like lovesick puppies, Thunder Bolt and Watford Zero might be able to say..?:shrug::shrug:
