This would obviously work as none of these wealthy people would be able to afford top accountants to ensure they don’t pay it.
The MPs are working on the assumption that all the wealthy people connected with this country, even the ones like the Hinduja family and Jim Ratcliffe who are resident overseas for tax purposes, will happily pay the 2% on their worldwide assets.

I wonder if that assumption is justified?

(Incidentally, the Oxfam article referred to in that linked article uses highly prejudiced cherry picking of statistics. Saying that the richest 1% of the people own more assets than the poorest 70% combined, sounds awful. Saying that the richest 1%, including the most extreme of billionaires, have an average of £4m of assets while the poorest 70%, including all the homeless and all the children and pensioners whose homes have been sold to pay for care, have an average of £50k assets - that doesn't seem so bad. Trying to make a case for poverty based on the below-average family of four having £200k in assets? Not quite as desperate-sounding as they would like.)

Not against the rules I agree before the cabal jump on it but really not a good look to have your Head of Operations posting on social media looking for volunteers to travel to the states and campaign for Harris. Stating that you have 100 Labour staff going to the US sounds very organised and not an "in my spare time" setup. I wonder who's paying for it all ?.

This Mike Amesbury seems like the type of guy I'd want representing me in Parliament.

'Two Jags II'.
You don't know why it happened or the full story though do you ?

One thing’s for certain, that was a cheap shot. The victim not only has his hands by his side, he’s looking the other way ffs. If he’d of cracked his head on the kerb, the headlines could of been very different.

He’s looking at a custodial in my opinion, especially as he continues his attack when the fella is on the ground.

What was good was that the people around responded immedeatley.

You'd like to think after the first punch he would stop and walk/get away.

Looks unhinged
Well, yes. But it's always best to get the full story. MPs can be very much on edge considering two of them have been murdered in recent years. So whilst it doesn't look good, I'd always wait for the facts. The Daily Mail somehow managed to add taxation issues to their article. Just odd behaviour.

The only thing that bemuses me is why some folk can't wait to use it to make valueless political capital. Strange pastime.

Have you seen the video of the actual assault?

No excuse whatsoever for that sort of attack. I don’t care what was said to him previously. That is EXACTLY how people get killed by one punch. A cowardly cheap shot.

It's relevant. We don't know if he was being physically threatened. My point is simply, wait for the facts.

No it’s not relevant. Nothing excuses that kind of assault. Do you think the victim looks aggressive at the moment the assault took place? You know, hands by his side, looking the other way?

This headline in the FT made me smile, just like Uncle Jimmy from Reginald Perrin:

Rachel Reeves will not unveil new freeports in Budget, officials admit

One government figure says Downing Street announcement on Friday was ‘total cock-up with the comms’

Presumably Mike Amesbury, when he released his statement, hoped that the only video out there was the one that didn't show his cowardly assault.

A punch like that can, and does, kill people. The charity One Punch UK have already spoken out about his thuggishness.

Let's hope Amesbury faces the full force of the law and leaves the Commons ASAP.

What a f***ing coward.

That’s a suspended custodial if I’ve ever seen one. Clear cut evidence. Scumbag.
