I think people need to turn this on its head. Maybe Welbeck is playing his best football in a decade in part because he has Ferguson as competition?

Forest have a similar thing with Chris Wood having a purple patch and Awoniyi taking a back seat.

Young pup energises old dog, old dog teaches young pup his new tricks. Just let it play out and give it time.

Nope I meant the overall situation with him. Lots of layers of baffling really. First there are some who say it’s more or less the same player as the one we saw when he first broke into the team, it’s just the style/tactics of Brighton now don’t particularly suit his strengths. I’m not sure I buy that but, if we don’t, then we move on to the next stage of baffling, which is the nature of his problems. Was it one long injury as you say or a succession of different lesser ones, reports look conflicting. The illness related to his temperature was reported well over a year ago now. Can that still be hampering him now after so long? It just seems an ongoing puzzle since he first dropped out of the team after his hat trick and I’m sure we both hope to see that level of player again soon, even if it’s just in promising flashes
He got absolutely f***ing banjoed at Chelsea when we destroyed them 2-1 at the Bridge. He was virtually unplayable that day and he has not been the same since. Injury & loss of confidence go hand in hand especially with a VERY young player. He’s coming back and starting to look sharp again.

He was bloody AWFUL at Newcastle yesterday, and has been a shadow of the player we saw banging in that hattrick vs Newcastle a year ago.

Right now, he's just not cutting it. He needs to sharpen up if he's going to contribute this season. Being young isn't an excuse, we just cannot carry passengers at this level. Harsh, and no doubt I'll get pelters, but I need to see a LOT more from him, and soon. The big regression is worrying.

Maybe a short spell in the U21’s, to get his mojo back…

Guess there's no predetermined time it takes a relative youngster to recover form and confidence after having had to work under a manager who supposedly didn't rate him, illness and a significant ankle injury and operation. Sure the club are doing the right thing

Let’s just hope he’s not thinking about his next drink…
Nah, I'm not having that. He's not another Connolly. He's clearly a proper professional footballer, not a nightclub dickhead. He's had some long term injuries and a fallow spell. I do think he can get back to where he was a year ago though, he has the talent and the attitude. But he needs to start showing it soon.

Yes, all fair observations. My concern is this is such an unforgiving League, its tough to carry youngsters finding their feet particularly up front. Evan has showed already he has the talent and the tools, I'm desperate to see him get back to that.

I thought I saw glimpses of his old form at one of the cup games earlier this year Sheffield I think it was. But I’ve not seen much since.

I don’t think there’s a single Brighton fan who won’t be patient with him for a long time to come given his age, potential and injuries. But at the same time we can be fairly honest about his form that he’s still some way off it.

Be interesting to see if he retains his Ireland starting place now he’s back playing regularly. Would have been absolutely unthinkable for Ireland to drop him injury-free but it’s a real possibility now. That said what a comeback story if he bangs in the winner at Wembley eh 😃

I detailed on here the timescale of his various injuries/illnesses a little while ago ( I don't remember exactly when but within the last few months). I'm sure if you use the search function it will come up.

Yeah. I hate bashing young players so wouldn' type that myself, but can't deny that's exactly what I was thinking during the match.

Let's look at the plus side. He's had an hour on the pitch to build up some match fitness, which will come in handy next week when he'll be our only proper striking option.

Don’t see this myself. Ferguson is hardly competition; his career is on an Arron Connolly style trajectory at the moment.

Players can take time to get "match fit" but sometimes you have to do that by sheer effort. He's lacking that in spades evidenced by the fact he's the last one in the box, way behind the play and not attempting to close down the opposition. He's waiting for something to happen not influencing it. I'd take him to one side show him the video of Saturday and ask him way he wasn't busting a gut to get in the correct positions.

If it were that he was just losing the ball, or finishing badly, then fair enough, these things can happen to a striker. However, in the Newcastle game he looked completely uninterested and hardly ever sprinted to close their defenders down. It is purely about effort for me and in this game he displayed zero of it (even more ridiculous considering he is one of our youngest players).

On the flip side, it felt like we beat Newcastle playing most of the game with 10 men, so bravo to the others

Lot of people saying same thing. So so strange. Maybe he just doesn't want to play football. Looks the same for Ireland barely busting a gut. Yet seems to be very humble in person.

Lots of overly harsh posts regarding a player that has just turned 20 who has been out with a pretty bad injury, probably played through some pain last season and is clearly struggling for confidence playing for a new manager with some different ideas. If ever a player needed one to go in off his arse. The turn and shot against Ipswich (I think) was a glimpse of his ability.

Maybe a couple of games in the 21s would help but he's not going to get that chance is he.

It's a bit like people want him to fail.

My theory would be that he actually can’t run about that much at the moment. I suspect his has limited stamina still (after glandular fever) and that his fitness levels have not returned in full.

Management will very likely be going through the whole game with him…….he also has direct access to clips of all his actions.

I don't think a single Albion fan wants him to fail, but there is concern that he doesn't seem to be on any sort of trajectory back to to the player we all saw when he broke into the team. As highlighted above, its the effort hes putting out on the pitch that seems to be the biggest concern right now.
