[Film] Best Film you have probably never seen?

My vote goes to Ridley Scott's 1977 debut The Duellists.

Made on two tenths of f*** all but got Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel to emerge from Hollywood to play the leading roles. The supporting actors must have been on minimum wage but are almost all of the great and good of British Theatre and film.

Let me give you:


Based on a Joseph Conrad novella it follows two French officers through the Napoleonic wars and their constant clashes over 15 years as one of the officers (Keitel) is frankly a psycho and loves duelling more than life.

The visuals are stunning considering the budget. A go to film every night when it is shit on TV e.g. tonight.

You titled the thread the best film you have NEVER seen but then go on to describe in great detail a film you have seen.

Can you not see where the confusion has arisen?

Anyway, thread that’s been done hundreds of times in various forms but never quite so confused as this.

just saying that there are many hundreds of superb films that never get shown so no-one knows about them.

The Browning Version with Albert Finney as Andrew Crocker Harris gets my vote.



And Greta Scatchi in her absolute prime.


Rarely shown on telly. I stumbled across it while channel surfing late one Saturday night many years ago.

“Best” is such a value judgment and so subjective it’s hard to say. Loads of people think Shawshank Redemption is one of the best films ever made but I’d sooner sit through the April 2019 0-0 away at Wolves again than endure that film a second time. In my view it’s that bad. (I appreciate this view probably says more about me than about the merits or not of the film.)

But on the basis that Rocky seems to be almost universally loved and I’ve not seen it then I’d probably say that in answer to the question.

The Duellists is a stonking film with fantastic acting and emotion , haven`t seen it for a while , as @jakarta rightly says - rarely on the box .

My addition is "The Libertine" , i don`t need an excuse to watch Depp i love his films , but this like "The Duellists" is not shown very often .

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, 1960’s Jacques Demy directed French romantic operetta, with 16 year old Catherine Deneuvre in her movie debut.

A beautiful film, with gorgeous music from Michel Legrand. One of my favourite movies and certainly one of the most stunning movies ever made visually.

The first two, the Chris Columbus ones, I found quite fun and whimsical. By the 6th-7th it’s all taking itself a bit too seriously for my liking

Shawshank Redemption.

I've been thinking about seeing it a 100 times but then I see the stills of a nicely groomed Freeman and some other lad sitting around talking in a fake rough environment and I just can't be arsed.
