Back in the eighties the military equivalent in rat packs were tins of bacon burgers. We used to chuck the bacon burgers and baked beans in a pot and then nuke to crap out of it. Tis a thing of beauty but I think that was down to fact that I was always hungry when in the field.

I just associate it with not having enough money for real meat. We even had it rolled up with a salad in the summer. Spam Fritters for school dinners was a poor substitute for fish.
My Dad used to harp on about spam being a treat when he was a kid. So one day he came home to see us all eating steak and chips in front of the telly.
"That looks good!" He said
"I've cooked everyone's favourite tonight, yours is on a plate in the oven." Replied my Mum.
Did he lose his shit when he discovered a plate of spam and chips. He never regaled us with tales of mingy spam again.

Spam fritters best thing on the school dinner menu.
I saw Spam fritters in Iceland a few month ago and thought I would try them to see if they were as good as I remembered. They were not!

However, reading about the crispy fried Spam on here has made me want to buy a tin and try that.

I was shocked how nice it was. I had it very crispy mind you. Really tasty but couldn’t have it every day without ending up in an early grave

I walked through Haywards Heath cattle market and the back end of the pigs put me right off this sort of thing!

A can is very expensive these days, it was a working class staple. What has happened to our once great nation when Chorizo is cheaper than Spam ?

Spam is an important ingredient in many Korean dishes, and diners aren't shy about using it -- especially those that specialise in kimbap and ramyon.

As a Gen Xer, my peers and I grew up with spam sandwiches... Although the Canadian variant is less salty and called Kam. My mother would also put a loaf through the grinder (manual in those days) and mix in mustard and/or relish. I love it, garnished or not, and so do all of my children. It's no different from any other sandwich meat in regards to taste.

I've never known any Canadian household to fry it. Even the South Koreans usually eat it right out of the tin or boiled in broth.

.
I'd imagine anything tastes better than poutine !

Haven't had spam since being a kid in the 70s. A staple during the power cuts ( cold obviously ). Have good memories of spam fritters as well. Not sure what I'd think of it now but I'd give it a go. As for those slagging off Corned Beef - food of the gods when used in hash along with cubed potatoes, onions, garlic and a fried egg on top.
