This morning I had a breakfast at a friend’s house. While they politely offered the usual breakfast fodder - fruit, cereal, eggs, bacon, they themselves were having a Spam sandwich.

Having never tried Spam (wasn’t it a wartime food, with little concern for taste or nutrition simply designed to last ages?) I opted to have one too when offered.

And bloody hell if it wasn’t absolutely lovely. It was fried on high heat, served crispy and absolutely delicious.

You're missing out on corned beef hash and pie, two things of wonder.

I'm not a massive Spam fan but my mate sent a picture of some cooked till crispy in Korean gochachang and the like and it did look great

As with anything, it's what you do with it that counts. There are loads of Asian dishes that incorporate spam.

I've never cooked it myself nor have I had a spam sandwich. Would certainly give it a go though

Spam is an important ingredient in many Korean dishes, and diners aren't shy about using it -- especially those that specialise in kimbap and ramyon.

As a Gen Xer, my peers and I grew up with spam sandwiches... Although the Canadian variant is less salty and called Kam. My mother would also put a loaf through the grinder (manual in those days) and mix in mustard and/or relish. I love it, garnished or not, and so do all of my children. It's no different from any other sandwich meat in regards to taste.

I've never known any Canadian household to fry it. Even the South Koreans usually eat it right out of the tin or boiled in broth.

I'm still scarred from going into lunch at primary school and my little heart leaping to see BACON written on the chalkboard.
So while I accept a spam fritter may taste nice it is forever associated with crushing disappointment.

Brown sauce is a must, my wife gorged in it whilst pregnant ...
