Well, they seem to have figures for the number of people crossing (maybe a estimate) and they must have figures for the number claiming asylum. The difference between those 2 numbers is the answer.
The number of people crossing are counted because they claim asylum on arrival.

Just the thing...a nice comfortable ferry crossing. We're supposed to be trying to deter or ideally stop them from coming here not encouage them!
the deteranet clearly dont work so needs a different approach. people are risking med crossing or overland routes through Turkey and Balkans, they are not put off by tales of long wait times, Rwanda and other parts of a hostile policy, if they even know of them at all.

Quite, and the Law says they are perfectly entitled to. Which part of that is an issue for you?
I am still simply questioning why refugees seeking asylum ( and with an acceptable reason for doing so; fear of persecution in their home country) would spend money and risk their lives to get to the UK by passing through safe European countries.

Why did you choose Portugal, rather than France? It's nearer.
It's about choice, and the Law allows for that choice.

Who knows? Go and ask one of them.

Call that research! The process where ( in 2018) nearly six times as many migrants came here from the EU than were removed ... Good ol Brexit eh
Article 7 of the EU allowed any country to remove EU citizens if they didn’t have health insurance, adequate income or a job within three months.
It was never implemented in Britain because our government didn’t do exit checks.
Britain chose not to be in Schengen, so passports were checked at ports & airports, by scanning, so exit checks would’ve been easy.
