any one remember Barnsley away in the Fa cup during the miners strike.. the old bill were o.t.t. that day and we lost

I remember it very well and the Brighton fans did themselves no favours that day with

"You can stick you Arthur Scargill up your arse..."

and

"Donkey Jacket, Donkey Jacket, so casual, so casual..."

Here we go...........

Yes we should have carried on doing mining at probably three times the rate than anyone else in the world in an industry that cost billions to subsidise.

And keep the fecking red flag flying as well.......
So what happens when UK oil and gas supplies run out?

Do we spend billions subsidising nuclear power? Or do we spend billions funding foreign wars to secure alternative supplies of oil? Or do we re-open the coal mines?

Energy supplies are vital for a modern economy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using public money to secure reliable supplies of a vital commodity that the private sector can't (or won't) deliver without subsidy.

It would interesting to see how subsidies for the arms industry over the years tally up against those given to the coal industry.

Haywards Heath
In more truthful words Thatcher finally put the NUM and their stupid leaders in their places and defeated them.

A great day for capitalism.
im a tory voter but closing the pits was a short sighted move , i am on the strikers side, though scargill was/is a knob for refusing to hold a ballot , which he would have won. He started that strike with a big union and a small house, and ended it with a small union and a big house , so the saying goes. He also bought a council flat in the barbican from the corporation of london, some socialist eh ?

Ask THPP! Ask Buzzer! Ask Afters! even ask TLO! they will all tell you the late 80's early 90's were a great period in the UK and we didn't bust like we have now because we succeeded on prudent fiscal polices and wise overseas investment.

Yeah, the last recession was great, you plank.

I worked in the construction industry in 1991 and was made redundant twice. Really great times.

Musically it was good, that's about it.

I was in Nottingham during the miners strike and it was not as clear cut as made out.

The pub I used to go to was a miners pub, a working miners pub.

I had a girlfriend during that time whose Dad and brother was on strike, to meet each other from Notthingham to her pit village, involved, many unpleasant scenes.

Having a southern accent was not approved by either side, even Notts miners did not approve of the attacks and vicious beatings handed out.

Eventually leading to us not really able to meet.

I moved up to Wakefield afterwards, which had at the beginning of 1984the UK biggest working mining population.

At a rugby league match I attended in 89 between Featherstone and Castleford turned into a mass brawl on the pitch and in the crowd.

Both sides at that time were based around mining towns. "Miners" made up the core of both teams. Castleford collieries had gone back in January 85, the miners at the Featherstone ones stayed out to the very end. All "Cas" were scabs.

no they didnt , plenty of people , not just yuppies, made money, you are talking rubbish.
Working class people didn't make fortunes in this period. Those with aspirations still got ripped off by the shysters like estate agents charging 3% commission for doing virtually f*** all and then pocketing fees from the banks when they arranged the endowment mortgage. Everyone bought cheap shares when the utilities were privatised without realising that they already owned them as a citizen of the UK , now they are paying the price of huge fuel/water/phone bills as the profits are syphoned off in shareholder dividends whereas the profits were previously used to pay for maintenance and upgrades.
