I would go for Mandela or Obama, I don't think there would be many people in the World who wouldn't recognise either of them if shown a photograph...I reckon far more wouldn't recognise Beckham or the Pope.

There's a photograph of Mandela in one of my school textbooks. The subject of the lesson actually being "famous people around the world." I have done this lesson a number of times and not a single one of my Japanese students has EVER recognised him. In contrast EVERY single student always recognises the picture of Beckham in the same book.

African politics doesn't really make it on to the Japanese radar it seems.
