If there's one thing I lOVE, its the sound of a guitar played well. When I'm a bit more crusty and have more time, I'm going to teach myself.

Anyway, just had my Guns n' Roses CD on, and I reckon you have to go a long way to beat the guitar solo by Slash in Sweet Child o' Mine...obscenely stupendous strumming by the frizzy-haired weirdo in the hat.

What solo's can challenge THAT ?

most of The Stone Roses first album

if i have to be specific Waterfall

or the wig out spectacular of the end of i am the ressurection

no-one could play like the man squire

I like the solo in 'Year Of The Cat' for Tim Renwick's elegance.

Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds doing 'I Ain't Got You' for sheer exuberance.

Bill Nelson & Be Bop Deluxe 'Crying To The Sky', and Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' for expression.

Jimi Hendrix for imagination on 'All Along The Watchtower.

Jimi wins overall for raw, feral, energetic inspiration on the end of his live version of 'Johnny B. Goode' from the Hendrix In The West album.
It always blows my mind

As much as I am not a massive fan of the song or the band, the solo in 'Hotel California' is very good.

Some of Hendrix's work is bafflingly good as well.

Also, perhaps not an obvious choice but in modern music you will be far pressed to find a better soloist then Steve Craddock of Ocean Colour Scene.

I think whiskey in the jar was pre-moore, at least I cant remember him being on ToTP with Lizzy then.

Rolling Stone magazine got it 1000x right when they went for Larry Carlton's solo on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" as the Greatest Guitar Solo Of All Time. It's the first track on their mighty good album "The Royal Scam". Fiendishly tricky to play but melodic, tasteful and stunning. None finer.
