Stories tonight that one of Oldham's black players suffered racist abuse from fans.

It's getting like Mississippi Burning up there. Kenny's Kop Klan.

I know footballers are thick as shit despite their huge wages, you can never claim a footballer to have a brain, but now the supporters are openly doing it in front of TV and CCTV cameras... I'm beginning to wonder who is the more stupid?

Oh and as a matter of interest will they be able to get away with an insincere apology on Twitter in order to save their careers and not end up in court like the Rt Hon Dianne Abbott? Because that to me sets a precedence.

People may want to hold their horses on this one. A Beeb journalist in the crowd where it happened is adamant they were shouting "manc bastard" and not "black bastard".

Maybe so. It sounds strange though - would that really reduce a footballer to tears? Wouldn't thought he'd last long if it did.

And would someone get arrested for "Manc bastard"? Cells would be full

He's never had anything to do with United though, so why would they shout that ? Or is it just an Oldham thing ?

Jeez. Supposition is...

1) Guys shout 'Manc bastard' in strong Scouse accents.
2) Player hears it as 'Black bastard' and gets upset etc
3) Fan(s) get arrested based on 2 and not 1.

Oldham being Greater Manchester, yes.

Calling someone a Manc bastard because he plays for Oldham, a third division team in an FA Cup match thats already dead & buried would seem a little unnecessary, if not downright improbable. Bit like us playing (say) AFC Totton & somebody screaming "f***ing scummer" at one of their players when we've won the game 5-1. Why would you do that?

If that really is the case, the bloke who shouted it displays a breathtaking lack of grace in victory for a Liverpool fan.

Possible that the player misheard a strong scouse accent but it wouldn't explain how scouse coppers misheard. I think it's unlikely that Manchester police were on duty.

Mirror journalist has tweeted to confirm his story and Guardian has also confirmed that supporters were arrested on suspicion of racial abuse

Even if they did shout the racist comment, what sort of man is reduced to tears by a bit of name calling

Grow up! (if that's true)
