I have high hopes with Lincoln with Liam Neeson playing Lincoln. It has all the ingredients to be a classic Les. Due for release 2009/2010.

What are these ingredients?

1 Talented but lightweight director
1 Average actor
Historical Setting for seasoning

Behave Les. Spielberg is a brilliant director, Neeson in Schindler's List gave one of the greatest acting performances ever committed to celluloid. Instersteller looks interested but TinTin does not rock my boat. I do not rave about very Spielberg fil for example I have not even seen The Terminal, his weakest was Always but even that had some bravuera scenes like the planes spraying and the saying/crash scene. For me Spielbegr peaked in the late 70's early 80's with Jaws, Riader, Close Encounters, ET and the mid 90-late 90's with Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan in terms of directing and film making the first 25 minutes of SPR has never been beaten before or after the direction of that scene was at a level no one else has come close to imo.

That's the bit you need to focus on more often. Who says that Neesons performance as Oscar Shindler was one of the best ever committed to celuloid? You seem to think general consensus is the benchmark of quality (IMDB) yet he wasn't honoured with an Oscar for that film, in fact if I'm right he didn't even get a nomination.

The first bit of Saving Private Ryan is indeed spectacular but there are plenty of other scenes that work well as a spectacle in plenty of other films. Filmaking is about more than just putting on a good show and that is why at times Spielberg falls downs. He will never be a truly great serious director in my books until he ditchs the mawkish sentiment and heart string tugging in favour of a more inventive, experimental and intelligent use of film to tell his stories and themes.

He is the greatest movie showman of his time, he is not a great film director.

I don't want an argument with Spielberg it's just that he says personal opinion as if it were fact. Then when questioned resorts to either using IMDB as back up or claiming I am some film elitist. The first is not a barometer of quality and the second is not true.

I think it is fair to say that we all know by now that US's taste in films is dictated by popular opinion. I still, of course like the chap but know to hold his film recommendations in about as much regard as his racing tips.
