This week should be good as that evil racialist bastard returns who killed someone in the original film.

i really really want to like this but it strikes me as Shameless, seasons 1 & 2, by Shane Meadows

I only caught episode 2 about an hour ago on compooter, and yes it could do with some enlivening. If he's like the others he'll have matured, in ways, and given up racism, perhaps turning to football hooliganism to relieve himself of the rage of rejection. He'll at least discomfort them at all, which will be a relief to me as it's all been too playful and concentrative on setting and fads than anything with any real meat to it. I've learnt little other than people cheat on people, and that's not just something of the 80s.

Which is exactly how SM has and intended to set the whole series up.
He says over the next 2 episodes 'we will go to some very dark places' (or something like that).

He intended me to be a bit bored and think it was slightly poorly-constructed?
Darkness is good, but it still has to be a well-stuck-together darkness. The darkness should have lain in their natural struggle rather than one random factor that directly throws them into the murk spectacularly. The threat of him should have been always there if never actual. That would chill me more than his explosive arrival.
Still, it should make for a better one-off than the last two.

I think that's what he has been doing.
The opening scenes were completely different to the closing scenes of the second episode.
They were all off to a wedding Sean was at school v Lol and Woody struggling, Sean sleeping in a toliet, bloke being beaten by dad, potential child abuse etc.
It's all set now for a really nasty bit of work to turn up and set it all off.

I thought the orginal setting was a ficticous town, and Grimsby/Cleethorpes was sighted as a possible likely setting.

They do sound fairly East Midlands though.

Edit: Uttoxeter in W Midlands, according to wikipedia.

Uttoxeter is in Staffordshire.

Much of it is set around the Gleadless Valley area of Sheffield
