The Incredible Points Gap

Just been messing around looking at the gap between Brighton (at the top of the league of course) and the significant places below us: the other automatic promotion spot (blue line); the team leading the play-off contenders (red line) and the team just outside the play-offs (green line). Stats start at the ned of October when we had just completed out incredible run and finish after all of today's games.

I guess common agreement would be that these are three good indicators of how strong our position is at any given point.

What is very striking is that whilst we were reeled in during our poor run, particularly the gap between us and the top play-off spot - by the end of today, the gap to second (and third) is back to 6 points and the gap to seventh back up to 8. None of these are a long way short of the position when we were at our absolute peak. In fact during the whole of November and December we have slipped just two points back on each of these three key metrics.

This tells us a lot about how inconsistent the chasing pack have been thus far, and also that the "fact" the chasing pack have closed the gap behind us peddled by some is largely untrue. More accurate would be the fact that the pack chasing the play-off places have closed the gap on the play-off spot.

6 clear of the other automatic promotion place.
6 clear of the play-offs.
8 clear of the best team outside the play-offs.

Pretty bloody impressive.

Nobody really wants to win this division very much. You get the feeling that the only way our so-called promotion rivals are going to pick up points is by playing each other :lol:

Just seen that Hartlepool have pretty much a game in hand over everyone that could see them hit second spot if they were to win. Crazy league this league one this season!

It is a crazy season, if we had 40 points at this stage of last season we would have been in 4th place and 10 points off the lead.

As posted on another thread...

If things carried on as they were, points taken home and away...

PI = Total played
PII = Home fixtures played
PtsI = Points taken at home so far
PtsII = Points to be scored at current rate (home)
PIII = Away fixtures played
Pts = Points taken away so far
PtsIII = Points to be scored at current rate (away)
PtsIV = Current total points
PtsV = Projected total

It probably doesn't tell us much as there are so many different factors affecting matches, form, results and so on... but it wasted 15 minutes.

Great stats you guys!!!

Interesting to see that although SCC are coming through like a train at the moment the disproportionate number of home games played to date means that they might struggle to maintain their push unless their away form improves dramatically. Also that if this were a "typical" season we would be in the play-off pack and well off the top spot. We are third best in terms of home form and the same away from home.

Unless "normal service is resumed" and a club (maybe SCC/maybe Wednesday?) go on a run of unbeaten form which one would normally associate with table-toppers, the whole season could be decided by games between the top few sides. If so,, the bad news is we are already in debit against two of them, Huddersfield and Wednesday.

The next fortnight might make things clearer. Depending on Monday's results we could be in second place by the time our next league game comes around simply because we are on cup duty next Saturday. A win (or at very least a point) is therefore vital at Exeter and given their home form (4th best in the division) that will be a tough ask.

Bear in mind the games against our nearest rivals have all been away so we play....... Sheff Wed, Southampton, Huddersfield, Carlisle, Peterborough, Hartlepool and Colchester all at home. Football averages says we will have advantages in home games. Bring them on

Must admit, much as i've always been worried about Southampton (they were clear,clear favourites) you correctly point out we've played almost all the top teams away and Saints have played a lot more home games then away... Bodes well...

But are you not a little worried that our home form has been so good BECAUSE we haven't played the top teams?

I wasn't worried...... until you posted that, however with Noone now signed plus hopefully another couple of quality signings I think (hope) we will be ok

We've played bournemouth (drew because of a disgustingly wrongly awarded last minute penalty) and chalton (fought back from 1-0 down with ten men to control and draw the game).
