Just been messing around looking at the gap between Brighton (at the top of the league of course) and the significant places below us: the other automatic promotion spot (blue line); the team leading the play-off contenders (red line) and the team just outside the play-offs (green line). Stats start at the ned of October when we had just completed out incredible run and finish after all of today's games.
I guess common agreement would be that these are three good indicators of how strong our position is at any given point.
What is very striking is that whilst we were reeled in during our poor run, particularly the gap between us and the top play-off spot - by the end of today, the gap to second (and third) is back to 6 points and the gap to seventh back up to 8. None of these are a long way short of the position when we were at our absolute peak. In fact during the whole of November and December we have slipped just two points back on each of these three key metrics.
This tells us a lot about how inconsistent the chasing pack have been thus far, and also that the "fact" the chasing pack have closed the gap behind us peddled by some is largely untrue. More accurate would be the fact that the pack chasing the play-off places have closed the gap on the play-off spot.
6 clear of the other automatic promotion place.
6 clear of the play-offs.
8 clear of the best team outside the play-offs.
Pretty bloody impressive.
