It was all a dream
I used to read Word Up magazine
Salt'n'Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine
Hangin' pictures on my wall
Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl
I let my tape rock 'til my tape popped
Smokin' weed and bamboo, sippin' on private stock
Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack
With the hat to match
Remember Rappin' Duke, duh-ha, duh-ha
You never thought that hip hop would take it this far
Now I'm in the limelight 'cause I rhyme tight
Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade
Born sinner, the opposite of a winner
Remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner
Peace to Ron G, Brucey B, Kid Capri
Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starsky
I'm blowin' up like you thought I would
Call the crib, same number same hood
It's all good

Uh, and if you don't know, now you know...

[Chorus:]

You know very well who you are
Don't let em hold you down, reach for the stars
You had a goal, but not that many
'cause you're the only one I'll give you good and plenty

[Verse Two:]

I made the change from a common thief
To up close and personal with Robin Leach
And I'm far from cheap, I smoke skunk with my peeps all day
Spread love, it's the Brooklyn way
The Moet and Alize keep me pissy
Girls used to diss me
Now they write letters 'cause they miss me
I never thought it could happen, this rappin' stuff
I was too used to packin' gats and stuff
Now honies play me close like butter played toast
From the Mississippi down to the east coast
Condos in Queens, indo for weeks
Sold out seats to hear Biggie Smalls speak
Livin' life without fear
Puttin' 5 karats in my baby girl's ears
Lunches, brunches, interviews by the pool
Considered a fool 'cause I dropped out of high school
Stereotypes of a black male misunderstood
And it's still all good

Uh...and if you don't know, now you know...

[Verse Three:]

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis
When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this
50 inch screen, money green leather sofa
Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur
Phone bill about two G's flat
No need to worry, my accountant handles that
And my whole crew is loungin'
Celebratin' every day, no more public housin'
Thinkin' back on my one-room shack
Now my mom pimps a Ac' with minks on her back
And she loves to show me off, of course
Smiles every time my face is up in The Source
We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us
No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us
Birthdays was the worst days
Now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay
Uh, damn right I like the life I live
'Cause I went from negative to positive
And it's all...

Gonna listen to some Nas on the way home before ripping my Biggie Smalls CD's to my Ipod. Aw yeah.

I haven't listened to Hip Hop since I left University- any recommendations for current stuff?

What a load of bollocks! They're not songs, just lyrical doodles. The likes of Barlow or Chambers could knock 20 of those out in a day if they felt like it.

Yes, the sense of panic in my household has been something to behold

Possibly my favourite post of the year.

Unless of course Mr Banana is a personal friend of Guru, in which case, I appologise.

Oh, and without coming across a bit modern and naff, I have to say Jay-Z is probably top of my rap tree. Or maybe KRS-One.

Yes, the sense of panic in my household has been something to behold, just as a matter of interest ,do you actually know this bloke 'guru'? is he a personal friend or relative , is that why you were 'panicking' ?

You'd have thought I was. We had 41 calls about this in three hours yesterday morning. Solar's handling all his press for some reason and won't tell anyone owt.

Bunch of spanners

Sorry guys, I know some of you like this but to me it is horeshit. It's what a twelve yr old whitehawker would come up with in his bedroom.

The height of acheivemnet is a Sega Genesis? What the f***?

"Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade

Yep, a modern masterpiece. It really IS a work of genius.

"Blow up like a landmine on a road to Sangin
My lyrics is bangin
Hangin'. Wid my homies in Portslade. Fairtrade. Get Paid.
Now I'm gettin' laid. Keep my bitches afraid.
It's the only way."

Yawn.

Out of interest, do you like any rappers?

There's the odd song I like but I wouldn't buy a rap album. White Lines by Grandmaster Flash was good, Stan by Eminem was good, Still Dre, the odd Snoop song but that's 1%.

The bulk of it is bollocks. Guys pretending to live the high life, with guns, smoking drugs, prostitutes etc. It's all a bit childish, the sort of thing a 12 year-old would aspire to. The clothes are also a bit childish - basketball vests, Ice Hockey tops, trainers. Grow up, get married, stay with your kids and get a f***ing grip.

I can see why rap music might be relevant to NYC or LA South Central, Philadelphia etc, with real ghettoes, no free healthcare, poor social security, inbuilt racism, but in multicultural Britain with a generous welfare system, free healthcare, abundant social housing and a culture of tolerance it has little resonance.

Ali G worked this out a long time ago.

I can't see how you can come to the conclusion that only 1 per cent of rap is good without having first listened to a large amount of it. I don't like country but wouldn't slag it off or call it irellevant, because I don't know the first thing about it.

Small minded views in this thread.
