So after trawling thru this I have come to the conclusion that equally to BLAME are Brown AND Thatcher.

because they're all as bad as each other, and they are all lapdogs for the city

For all those that slag off the very existence of the Lib Dems let it be remembered it was New Labour that presided over the the disastrous "light touch" on regulating the banks, and it's Cameron that is laying it all on the line to protect the City now. At least Vince Cable and the Lib Dems bring a different dynamic to the debate.

HT - Are you still with/working for GSK? If so there was some opinion from Andrew Whitty (CEO) on this point knocking around on the company intranet yesterday apparently.
Seems that they'll be more work and jobs moving out to the likes of Mayenne, Aranda, Parma, Poznan, the Carolinas etc as well as the CH division's ongoing disposal of a number of profitable, and predominantly, UK products/brands (and therefore jobs) in order to fund investment overseas.
Still, the share dividend's up so perhaps I should be elated with all the "Shareholder Value" coming my way?
Latest industry/agency gossip is the 2-3 month European Medicines Agency "shutdown" at Canary Wharf next summer; they're using London 2012 as a smokescreen for a trial relocation to Bonn.

I had not picked up on this. Thanks for highlighting it. There were two articles yesterday, one from Witty and one from the financial guy Simon Dingmans. Dingmans' makes interesting reading as he makes the point of the 'patent box' tax being a great incentive but then also says GSK are looking to move research out to other countries..some which now have similar incentives. You do have to ask the question why the government have not done more to retain GSK's, and pharma R&D in general, business. They must have certainly been aware of it as Witty is an advisor to Cam. Further, the Tories highlighted rather loudly the sector as having the type of jobs they want to retain and create in the UK. You may recall they said this just before Phizer announced it was pulling out of the UK

The EMA move is an interesting one. I'll see if I can find anything out.

From my own personal anecdotal experience a lot of R&D work seems to be heading out to, or being generated in, Germany. Their R&D sector seems to be bonkersly bouyant. Again, why are we not doing more to hold onto real jobs? March of the makers? Did Osborne mean makers marching out of the UK?

It made no odds whether he announced the fact or not. Do you really think a government could sell a nation's worth of gold secretly without anyone knowing about it?
It doesn't all have to be sold in one day. Instead of announcing the sale one day, he could have just sold a chunk of it, then kept the rest until later. He could have sold a chunk, said he'd be soon selling the rest and then bought the first chunk back for less than he sold it for. Money for nothing. He could have done anything but what he did do.

Perhaps it is you that doesn't understand. The lacklustre regulation you refer to was a direct result of Labour policy. Gordon Brown congratulated himself on having made sure that there was a "light touch regulatory system" in his Mansion House speech of 2007......no mention of greedy bankers then.

The revelations of how close Labour and News International were in bed together is a window on how they operated in power. If there is one thing politicans love it is someone more powerful than they.......it would be good to know how many times Brown/Blair/Darling et al choked down Goodwin's veiny cock and surpressed the regulator from doing exactly what was required of the FSA (as defined by Labour's very own Financial Services and Markets Act 2000).

At least Balls has apologised for Labour's incompetence in September, and in Parliament.......we are still waiting for Brown.

That said how (after today's news about RBS) he is currently the shadow chancellor is a f***ing mystery. Proof if any was needed that politicians these days have no shame and they should be chucked in the oven.

He's already f***ed up royally.......what makes you think we should trust him or any other Labour minister again.

Don't remember the Tories complaining too much about the lack of regulation. In fact, they started the deregulation of banks back in the 80s. To think they would have done any different when historically, Tories err on the side of free market and less regulation is a joke.

As for you comment relating to News International, you must be having a laugh. You criticise Labour implying that the Tories never court the favours of the press. For christ's sake, CMD is bossom buddies with Rebecca Wade and even employed an ex editor of whom most people would have surmised at the time that he would have know about the practices the likes of Mulcaire were involved in.

There is no right or left when talking about the 2 party system in this country both have become the same. We go to war under 1 goverment and the opposition backs them, the party in power tells the other party wants going on in the country and behind the scenes the opposition is in agreement. We veto in Europe but New Labour slate the PM but then say they would not have taken the terms either. Both parties are controlled by big money behind the scenes whether it be banks or industry and New Labour is not fit to use Labour in its name as they have discarded most of the things they were set-up to defend and are now little different from the Cons. Look at the cycle of goverment for the last 40yrs, a goverment is in for 10yrs or so then it all goes tits-up for 1 reasons or other, new goverment they last long enough for a new wave of voters to come along who don't remember the previous lot and it's back to the old lot again with both parties doing and making the same mistakes over and over again. Right is Left and Left is Right.
