I guess the debate with Pietersen is whether you'd rather have a batsman who is capable of staggeringly brilliant innings but also rash mistakes, or a more run of the mill player who trundles along and grinds out the occasional high score but never once puts the fear of God into the opposition?

Stupid shot, but I'd still rather have Pietersen's perceived liability over say Ian Bell's nervous shuffling around the crease.
