How sad. A true gentleman and a reluctant hero; active until fairly recently.
When asked how he wants to be remembered, he said "I don't. I want to be forgotten. Remember the others [who have fallen]."

By the seaside in West Somerset
When I was young the world was full of veterans of "the first war" - indeed my grandfather served in the navy at Jutland and would occasionally regale us with stories of life below decks, but also of the sacrifice of others and his sense of guilt that he survived.

And now there is one.

I'm glad that Mr Allingham's passing engenders such a positive sentiment in people of all ages. I hope indeed that we never do forget what they gave.

Yep. I'll do that. Both my grandmothers lost brothers.

The last representative of a generation of heroes.

Next time you think you have problems give a thought to what Henry and his comrades had to face.

RIP
