B&H city council pay SERIOUS money towards it. The event runs at a substantial loss and YOUR council tax money bails it out every year.

Dublin Pride is said to generate about 8 million euros for the local economy - Brighton Pride is significantly bigger. I suspect its subsidising the council, local employment, hotels, food service industry, etc, etc.

Pride is just a massive booze and drug fest not really about being proud of anything but I usually have a wander round it to admire the costumes and take in the atmos.

There are some nutty stalls there selling the most gonzo sex toys and gimp stuff so that should keep the North Stand happy and you can stock up with a years worth of poppers and Nitrous Oxide balloons....You could even buy lumps of coal from the wreck of the Titanic one year, although it could have just been normal coal from the garage with a dodgy certificate for all I know.

Word of caution though, under no circumstances do a load of Vodka jello shots, smoke some ganj and go on the big Bunjee pod thing. not pretty I can tell you.

I usually watch the parade but have not been to the Park bit. A friend of mine whose house overlooks Preston Park always has a wander down there and says it is quite amusing and very good for people watching. I can't see a problem with Pride myself. For all the nonsense talked about the gays in Brighton, esp on Pride I think for the most part they bring a sense of fun and a bit of colour to the town and I have never seen any intimidating behaviour from any of them. I am more concerned with the boozed up chavs on West Street every weekend, much more threatening.

Its about as "family friendly" as a kick in the bollocks.

There is no way on this earth that I will be taking my kids anywhere near the park where class A's are freely available, people off their tits on all sorts, just about everything pornographic on display, shagging in bushes and toilets and fellatio and just about everything else in between. Its not right. Its not "family friendly", ok so they have a bouncy castle and a few fun rides. So does the Pier without all the above.

The parade I can just about live with - but even then "decency" almost goes out the window.

Personally they should have it at Stanmer - if they really need a venue in Brighton and it SHOULD be family friendly but for some reason its treated as a massive drugs and booze bender (pardon the pun) and really does nothing to promote diversity.

Damn right I would. But why people want to take their kids to it is beyond me.

Furthermore Brighton is one of the most diverse cities in the UK so really there is no need to promote it here.

Really it should be in other towns/cities which are a bit more homophobic. Everyone knows Brighton has a huge gay population and the pink pound is thriving and they are generally) welcome here anytime, not just one Saturday in August.

I am not objectionable. I simply believe that the cities are for all....or at the very least the people who live in them. I cant stand NIMBYism and complaining about a park being over run and out of bounds for one day of the year is a supreme example.

If this event didn't happen, Brighton would be a lot poorer, and your council rates would be astronomically higher than they already are. Putting some money into the event gives a better chance for having a decent return on that investment.

You think that the Pride committee just turn up and wing it for a day? Hundreds, probably thousands of man-hours goes into preparing the day, including all kinds of planning restriction, police liaison, licences, stewarding etc. Failing to do so would mean we'd end up with another day of carnage like for Norm's day on the beach in 2002.

All the licences that have to be paid.

Business partnerships between local business and the council that 'thrive' on the back of an event like this means that the council stumps up less money for providing services.

Look at anything council-run these days. Bins have 'sponsors' names on them. Roundabout signs are sponsored. Beaches were sponsored for a while. Car clubs are not always funded straight from council coffers. You need a healthy local economy for that to happen.

And then there's the silly fuckers who drive into town and park where they like...
