Just announced the PL want to play a 39 game season with the extra match being played abroad.
The top 5 teams will all be seeded so couldn't play each other.

Can't wait for Bolton v Fulham in Shanghai.

Cannot see how it would work. So you get to play one team 3 times, with one of those games overseas. So if you are 4th from bottom, 2 points clear of relegation and you draw one of the top 3, while the team just below you draw the team that are bottom, you are not going to be happy when you go down because you had to play an extra game.

From the report "Clubs will see this as a chance to make more money so they can invest in new facilities and better players."

Top clubs consider overseas games

The English Premier League is considering playing some matches overseas, BBC Sport has learned.
At a meeting in London on Thursday, all 20 clubs agreed to explore a proposal to extend the season to 39 games.

Those 10 extra games would be played at venues around the world, with cities bidding for the right to stage them.

It is understood the additional fixtures could be determined by a draw but that the top-five teams could be seeded to avoid playing each other.

This is a chance for the Premier League to showcase its product around the world

BBC sports editor Mihir Bose

It is unlikely any decision will be taken before the Premier League's annual summer meeting in June, but any changes could come into effect for the 2010/11 season.

Points from those extra games would count towards the league table.

Should the proposal get the go-ahead, cities in Asia, Middle East and North America are likely to show a strong interest in hosting the extra games.

It is believed each venue would host two matches over a weekend.

Surely this is a joke, am checking my calendar now to see if its April 1st already!!

BBC sports editor Mihir Bose says the Premier League's decision to explore such a move is a "logical" one.

"The growth of the Premier League has been impressive in the last 15 years thanks to the sale of television rights in this country," he said.

"But now the market in the United Kingdom is becoming saturated and it is the overseas market which is now the big target area."

A number of top-flight clubs already play matches around the world as they seek to capitalise on the huge global interest in the English game.

Man Utd make regular visits to Asia and are proving a big hit in China

Manchester United are regular visitors to Asia, Middle East and America while other clubs are beginning to follow their lead.

"This is a chance for the Premier League to showcase its product around the world," added Bose.

"Some fans may feel aggrieved, but their concerns will be outweighed by the advantages.

"Clubs will see this as a chance to make more money so they can invest in new facilities and better players."

There is likely to be a big scramble for the right to host the extra games.

"It will be like cities bidding for the Olympic Games or the World Cup," explained Bose.

Wouldn't it be better if 1st played 20th, 2nd played 19th, 3rd played 18th etc??

The only problem is if these games are played over the course of a season then league positions will of course change.

So they play it at the end of the season, your team is struggling to fight off the threat of relegation, just the sort of game that you want to get behind your boys and spur them on to victory...lo and behold, you are playing away...in Los sodding Angeles...this is the most stupid idea I have heard in football for many a year and final proof that money is now more important than anything else.

It is one thing to arrange a friendly or exhibition match for a blank weekend, say after you have been knocked out of the FA Cup, but this is a different matter entirely...plain bizarre.

absolute toss , all about the money. On the one hand we apparently play too many games now they want to jet players around the world .

No passion , no soul , no roots !!!!

i take it the new foreign men in football are responsible for even entertaining this thought. No way can any real football fan back that idea

But you have got to admit, that would be a pretty cool away match for the weekend! Not one to concern us however - we can't even get to Blackpool at the moment. :D

Unlike gridiron & the NFL, all of these proposed countries have their OWN professional football leagues. If they want to watch football, let them watch their own local leagues.

It's a totally SHITHOUSE idea.
