Has anyone seen local guitar legend Richard Durrant?

Technically, he's as good as anyone I've ever seen on classical guitar.

Yes. Because my dad used to teach him way back when.

This old chestnut has been asked before and is too subjective and of course people will tend to vote for players who play their type of music. Plus there is the debate of 'feel' over 'technical' ability. For what its worth i'll breakdown my selections:

Most Groundbreaking and influential:

1) Jimmy Hendrix
2) The Edge
3) Eddie Van Halen

Feel:

1) Ritchie Blackmore
2) Gary Moore
3) BB King

Technical:

1) Joe Satriani
2) Steve Vai
3) Yngwie Malmsteen

Best Twin guitar:

1) Dave Murray & Adrian Smith - Iron Maiden
2) Brian Robertson & Scott Gorham- This Lizzy (Live & Dangerous being my all time fave album)
3) James Hetfield & Kirk Hammett- Metallica

Most overrated:

1) Kirk Cobain- SMTS is great riff but otherwise nothing special
2) Hank Marvin- Dull Dull- His vibrato sends me to sleep
3) Eric Clapton- Layla is great riff but otherwise can't see what the fuss is about

I'll get hung out to dry but for me it has to be Steve Rothery of Marillion, still a great band, live and on album.

The Edge stole his sound from Tom Verlaine and Andy Gill...

Interesting. I've not heard them so i can't comment. However, i would perhaps give the Edge credit for popularising that delay technique and incorporating it in mainsteam songs without being too self indulgent.

I happen to love players like Vai, Malmsteen and Satriani but i totally admit the criticism that its self indulgent and just maybe they should realise that the song comes first before the "wow look at my shit hot technique".

There's a reason for that...

Mark knofler is one of the few guitarists who has a completely individual sound. You can tell its him right from the first note. Thats why in my opinion he should be considered one of the best.

The greatest guitarists however have to be measured as the ones who break new ground and move the instrument on that is why for me Hendrix stands alone as the King of the electric guitar.
