had a debate with a mate last night about guitar players; i was saying the best ever was jimi hendrix he was saying slash!
your thoughts?

When I worked on their 'November Rain' video shoot I have to admit I had been sceptical about Slash's ability, but to his credit he played several takes, live, and changed the solos every time - and each time it was still quite excellent.
Once though, I spoke to him about how brilliant it was for him to play along with Rory Gallagher at The Roxy, straight after seeing it happen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7Hn4QInVSY)
he just turned his head away and said nothing, like he had some reason to be stuck up about it. sweet guy.

Perhaps, quite probable in fact.
What makes a 'best guitarist' may not be his/her ability to play someone else's material, or complex arpeggios that are so incredibly difficult that he/she's the only person capable. You'd have to think that, if said guitarist could play incredible stuff, they would most-certainly be playing stuff that is accessible to the ear, and they would be discovered by somebody.

I have seen some bloody amazing players sequestered away in some dark tiny bar in nowheresville, but playing in bands that will never go anywhere beyond those kinds of pubs due to a lack of writing talent, or musicianship among the remainder of the band
