Can anyone give me some advice on plumbing costs? My parents recently had a combi boiler fail on them so wanted a cheap replacement as they are moving in a couple of years. They asked a plumber they knew to fit it and he came back with a cost of £1,600 Inc the boiler. Thinking that was dear and must be the cost of the boiler, they bought a cheapish boiler themselves from wicks for under £500. Have asked a different plumber to do the labour and he has quoted £700 to do the work.
Now surely with all the pipe work in place it should take no more than half a day to do the work? Are plumbers really earning that much? I know they have to take a week off work at their own costs for the corgi regulations etc, but these labour costs seem extortionate? Thoughts please!

In my experience most plumbers will not fit a boiler or gas fire purchased by the customer. It creates a big headache if there is a fault in the appliance. The customer will blame the installer and the installer will blame the appliance and will charge extra to assist in replacement or repair of the faulty appliance.

If you purchase via the plumber they add an extra couple of hundred quid to the price for the priviledge. Its a real stitch up.

Wouldn't use British Gas - they're known for their sky high prices.

The boiler my parents have bought comes with a 2 year guarantee to Inc any labour that's needs for it to be fixed. So that shouldn't be a problem to a plumber who wants the work.

I agree, but can talk from experience. Using the Gas Safe internet site I contacted the 20 nearest installers to my house with the aim of their installing a gas fire I was to buy myself. Not a single one was interested in the job under those terms.

Thats the reality.

Im not saying they dont, Just pointing out that the only cost of being a plumber is not just " a week off to do gas safe "




If a boiler is fitted correctly it will take more than a day plus the price of a boiler will not include any flue, external controls, pipe work and extra fittings which soon add up so £700 is a cheap price if fitted to current regulations and manufactures guide lines

Screwfix total £1275 assuming boiler is in roughly the same place and the gas pipe is the correct size

plus min of 2 - 3 days labour ( at unc c price ) £6,300
