UK Guantanamo four to be released

Four of the five British residents who are being held at Guantanamo Bay are to be released, the BBC has learned.

The government requested the release of all five men from the US detention camp in August after previously refusing to intervene on behalf of non-UK citizens.

Jamil el-Banna, Omar Deghayes and Abdenour Samuer will come back to the UK, while Shaker Abdur-Raheem Aamer will return to his native Saudi Arabia.

The detainees are not British citizens but lived in the UK before being held.

Intensive negotiations

The fifth man, Ethiopian Binyam Mohammed al Habashi, will remain at Guantanamo.

THE FIVE DETAINEES

Omar Deghayes, Libyan with refugee status
Shaker Abdur-Raheem Aamer, Saudi Arabian granted indefinite leave to remain
Jamil el-Banna, Jordanian with refugee status
Binyam Mohammed al Habashi, Ethiopian asylum seeker
Abdulnour Sameur, Algerian with leave to remain

British and US authorities have been in intensive negotiations about their return over the past few months despite the Pentagon insisting the men are all dangerous.

The US is seeking reassurances that they will not pose any security threat.

The Americans accuse Mr el-Banna of being a prominent al-Qaeda recruiter and financier, Libyan Mr Deghayes of associating with al-Qaeda, and Algerian Mr Sameur of receiving combat training in Afghanistan.

An official announcement on the releases is expected in the next few weeks.

The Conservatives have been asking the government whether they think the three men returning to the UK pose a threat and if so what security precautions will be taken when they return.

The men have all either been granted refugee status, indefinite leave or exceptional leave to remain in the UK.

Camp closure

Foreign Secretary David Miliband formally wrote to his US counterpart Condoleezza Rice with the request for the men's release.

Last year the Court of Appeal upheld the government's decision not to request the return of non-British nationals because the US said it would not negotiate with third countries.

The Foreign Office also said such a move would be counterproductive to its aim of securing the closure of Guantanamo.

The foreign secretary and the home secretary said they requested the release of the men because of steps taken by the US government towards shutting down the detention facility.

The government said all British nationals had been released from Guantanamo by January 2005.

The detention camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba was created in early 2002 to hold suspected terrorists captured in Afghanistan.

Mind you, in the Second World War anyone who smelt vaguely German was sent to the Isle of Mann, so I guess they got off lightly.

*shuffles off mumbling US military scum pentagon arseoles etc etc*

Here's a true story about US military intellegence.

In the 60's and early 70's Mrs Wildy Ears's dad, (lets call him Col Mrs Wildy Ears), was the UK military attache to Lebenonn and Syria. He was offered a top job with the British government based in The Pentagon as British liason with the CIA.
Jolly good you all say," now there's a promotion".
So the CIA send him and his family back to the UK, to Durham, to the University of Durham for one year all paid for, including school fee's for three girls, to learn Arabic.
Lovely, a year out from spying, relaxing in the accademic splendour or this establishment learning the language of the region for your next f***ing major (sorry f***ing colonel)posting.
However, ........... those clever fuckers at the Pentagon booked him on a course of classical Arabic. So when the Mrs Wildy Ears family take up residence in the now major middle eastern war zone of Beirut the head of British military intellegnce (Col Mrs Wildy Ears) is walking around talking like a bit part actor in a bad version of The Muppets do Royal Sheakespear Company do Julius Ceaser.

And that is 100% true story.

Always 2 sides to a story and what would a Libyan refugee living in Brighton be doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan ?
Not exactly a club 18-30 to Benidorm ???

Its a point that I think most people hold and I for one need to know more information.

How was he picked up how where and why ??

Now when the Americans were trawling Afghanistan in combat, they dont collate loads of info. and charge and send men to trial. They as other Armies have prisoners of war.

Now my indifference to this particular individual is based on the unsubstantiated assumption that this man may of been fighting for the enemy and may if not fighting a full supporter of Al Quaeda, and therefore celebrates each death of our own brave soldiers.

His link with Britain and Sussex is odd as this just happens to be the last place he resided before maybe going to fight against our own allies.

The only real hearsay....is some of you lot presuming him innocent when the known evidence suggests that he is likely not to be......

What eveidence is that then?

5 years in a hellhole then freed without charge?

f***ing discusting. :nono:

What evidence and why wasn't he charged with anything?

In a war situation, during a battle I dont think that they collate information to charge anyone.............. they generally 'round up their presumed enemy' this is quite usual in war scenarios.....i guess.

This wasn't frigging West Street you know.

Why would you presume innocence ???

Why would anyone leave his 'newest home ...and all his bests friends the neo liberal brigade' and go to war torn Afghistan after the USA actions...... at the very least he is 'terrorist sympathisor' at the very worst he was the enemy that wished to kill our own troops.

Now whats you argument that puts him as a wholly innocent bystander ??
