I'd be tempted towards Kubrick, yet Fritz Lang is a close second.

If you'd like an interesting fact...A scene shot without sound has the letters 'MOT' written on the clapperboard. This comes from Fritz Langs call of "Mit Out Sound" and has stuck. Well there you go.
