the latter i believe, although the screenplay has been described as "a narrative of modern life, a truly enobling experience, an allegorical vision of one dog's struggle for success in a man-made world"

I was actually amazed the first time I saw The Seventh Seal just how many light comedy moments it has, considering most people are frightened off by Bergman's dark and introspective nature. It's actually quite a chucklefest.
