Well it looks like you are getting a racing greyhound. As I have already mentioned after years of involvement at the dog stadium, where I ignored all the abuse going on, I now support the campaigns to stop betting on greyhound racing as it looks the only way to stop the suffering and cruelty involved across the industry.

The industry does little to regulate itself, thousands of greyhounds and there puppys are destroyed by hanging, shooting, drowning and various other cheap methods, just beacuse they do not make the grade.

You have stated your dog will have a home and hopefully be well looked after, feed and walked. You are also aware vets bills may/will run into the thousands of pounds. My greyhound won its owner money, that may have covered some of the vets bills and costs, he had dozens and no way of funding or managing retirements for them.

My dog was given to the first person who wanted him at the track once he reached 5 and had to be retired. They just put him out on the street and he was probably one of the few lucky ones to find a home via the Brighton and Hove dog warden.

In all your excitment of owning a racing dog, please considor the industry and keep your eyes open to the abuse and misery it supports. Loads of information is on the internet if you want to know more about the less glamourous side of Greyhound racing.

Good to meet up with Mr & Mrs Manny and J2 last night, don't think you forgot anything Manny, think we got some good grounding and can now get this up and running. Barry we did talk and agree it would be a good idea to re-name the dog something to do with NSC, also we discussed about Bozza setting up a seperate forum for the syndicate, and would be a good idea to have another meeting towards the end of the month to finalize things.

You're not one of the "anti's" that sometimes stand outside the stadium with out-of date literature & banners and refuse to listen when owners tell you how well their greyhounds are looked after, and what a fantastic job the Brighton Retired Greyhound Trust does with rehoming dogs after retirement?

The vast majority of owners make provisions for their dogs retirements with rehoming centres or friends/family.

Sorry peeps for not repsonding to everything that's been going on in the initial meeting for the NSC Greyhound Syndicate, just been having a little personal stuff going on in my life at the moment. Hope it's all settled down now.

Right, lets get this show on the road. Name suggestions for the Greyhound and the Syndicate to my inbox please, and how many shares you'd like. £100 for a whole one, £50 for a half share. And the ongoing commitment is £20 a month for a whole share, and £10 a month if you have a half share. Hope that's fine with everyone, if not let me know please. Cheers Barry (Seagulltonian)

I'm in - PM on it's way! When we met we thought doing half shares might be more hassle than it's worth and potentially cause us issues further down the line. As a couple of people have responded since our meeting the option of two people clubbing together to buy a full share is obviously fine.

Is it worth getting a date in the diary towards the end of October (Thursday 28th?)where those that have committed can meet up to review the name suggestions, agree what dog or type of dog we want to buy & when, create a contact list etc etc

Also, assume you're happy to set up a bank account and get the ball rolling with registering the syndicate etc? Once people commit it'd be good to strike whilst the irons hot and get them to deposit the £100 and set-up the direct debit.

I guess that's all that is needed. I believe its a Standing Order that needs setting up not a Direct Debit.

I am unsure if I am an 'anti', I was a big fan of Crass/Pink Indian type bands in my youth so I hope I am in many respects. However I imagine facts like I have a mortgage, wife, bald patch coming on, beer belly, Albion/Sussex CC season ticket/memberships, car etc etc, make me pretty conformist in my middle age.

I have never stood outside the dogs, in fact the last demo I attented was the stop the war march many moons ago in London, even then I moaned about the cold.

My dog after being picked up off the streets was re homed to us by the RGT, but you highlight the problem yourself about it being self regulated, the trainer/kennels he was with completly refused to have anything to do with them, especially as it involved fees and extra costs.

I guess he was a lucky one from there, as I said before I think the betting industry (of which I was a part of for many years) keeps this outdated system afloat. The Irish puppie farms look horendous from what I have looked up on line.

I cannot stop people buying and running dogs as its still perfectly legal, but will continue to write and canvas people (MP's) about tighter regualtions and ending training/breeding practices that lead to cruelty towards greyhounds.

From the little I know just wanted to put the other side of the industry across, so none of you go in blind. If any of you in your role of owners then see anything bad going on you may think about acting or reporting it.

The puppy i mentioned earlier in this thread has now had two races at harlow and has won them both! He ran wide and stayed on both times, indicating he is well suited to Hove.

You've obviously had some bad experiences in your time so I can undestand your views. However, I'm sure you understand that youre experiences don't tell the whole story of all the greyhounds up at Hove.

I have been going to the dogs on a regular basis since 1992 and have owned 2 dogs (syndicate) during that time. I have never seen any cruelty going on and I know that when both of my dogs retired there was no shortage of people that wanted them as pets.

I don't doubt that there is cruelty in the sport but it is a very small percentage of people that this relates to. Obviously even that small percentage is still too much but other than vetting perspective owners before they register a dog (not sure how that could be done) I don't see what more can be done.

Good luck to the syndicate I say, but please make sure the dogs latter years are thought about - I'm sure they will.
