Yes. First league game of 77/78 - pouring hard - 0-2 half time and 3-2 full time. Great game but these filth from South London were trying to climb from the South West, up into the seats. As I was quite near to the front, it stays in the mind of a boy who was only 14 at the time.

 I was 18.

Actually not sure I was at that one. I remember one happy afternoon running after (and sometimes away from), your fans in the industrial estates around the Goldstone. Must have been about 1988???

And trouble getting in after kick-off when we had been delayed getting to the ground.

Personally, the worst was at home to Birmingham 1989 just after Hillsborough.

Actually Herbs, I think the poster was referring to a game against Millwall. Why would you have been at that one?

Worst violence I have seen at Selhurst (or the environs anyway) was your mob chasing some swindon hobos. Trouble was the leading runner from your mob slipped on Horse poo at which tme all the others chasing up behind him fell over him (rather like one of the Grand National mass falls etc). Extremely amusing as I watched from the window of my flat in Selhurst Road (but I guess you had to be there)

No need to have been there with such eloquent prose provided by your good self, old chap.

I remember Chelsea, Spurs, Millwall (Was in N.Stand, turned around and saw my fiance being strangled by her scarf by some bearded docker...with that pleading look in her eyes that meant I was about to be beaten to death...took one step forward, and remember nothing after that except after the match seeing Millwall fans standing on cars at that showroom along from the ground kicking some cornered scarfers., and also Arsenal that doesnt seem to have been mentoned. Was in the North Stand and suddenly realised the place was full of people not wearing scarves and no familier faces. Decided running for my life was the better part of valour, and it went off just as I got to the end of the stand and the police, ....who looked terrified. Still remember the frantic calls on the tannoys for the police outside the ground to get in the ground asap.

Rochdale away...believe the young mans name was Gussie Gunn?... jumped onto pitch... ran the length of the pitch, and jumped in the Rochdale end and started fighting on his own....

Chesterfield away.. last match of the season.. if we won, we would have gone up as champions... it 1-1..
People started climbing onto the pitch, and the police were helping some of them...?? It was only when we ran past the players that the ob realised what was occuring..never seen so many people trying to get out of doorway at the back of their end at once...

Seem to remember trouble all over the goldstone for a Man City visit as well..

Chasing Palace fans down Fulham broadway after that cup match was funny.. most went after the Palace fans but a sizeable crew were heading for Challis's (the ref) dressing room....

and the funniest thing I saw was on cup final day.. a mob of manures came to Victoria Station....not sure what they expected, but the whole area of Victoria was blue and white, and they ended up running away..

happy days...lucky not to have been seriously hurt, but had a laugh..

We were playing reggae nights at the Inn Place under the Alhambra thru the 80s...and have to say..all the other clubs firms respected the fact that we wouldnt let them in, as being a reggae club, with the smoking issue, it was hard enough or us to get a place to play, and the last thing we needed was a firm in our dance..
quite a few of the Bosun people used to come to our dance and parties..

Just remembered being arrested at York ..for laughing at a copper...
Id never seen police on horseback wearing showjumping helmets before
and I was almost wetting my self pointing and laughing and feckers arrested me for being drunk, and breach of the peace..

Was also arrested at Rotherham for singing??????? Some Sikh copper with a blue turban... thought I was trying to be smart
but I genuinly didnt understand a fecking word he said, as his Yorkshire accent was so thick.. mate told me later he was saying..
dont thee want t'go home lad...image and speech just didnt compute.....

Feck me.. just seen how much i just posted...sorry...im more stoned than I thought and clearly rambling...! haha

Stoke was a promotion party. Their enclosure was RAMMED - really full and they were just about to go up. Don't recall any violence though

No it was a relegation party, they went down having previously not won an away match all season until they beat us 4-1

Funny how opposite side's see different angles. As a 15 year old I remember the huge mob of palace waiting at earls court for any brighton on the trains.Eventually everyone was cleared from the station for refusing to get on a train. We all had a long walk back to victoria in an escort.Missed school the next day.

There are only two incidents to compare.....

Spurs '78(?) and Chelsea '83. Wasn't at the Spurs game so for me it has to be Chelsea.

Chelsea '83 i remember as we saw the Chelsea fans making a point of walking down West Street. When did Portsmouth get given the North Stand? I remember that day in town being pretty hairy

I only started going to games in 1989 so much of the violence was dying out. However, does anyone remember playing Stoke in 1990? I was only 9 at the time but recall we went one up in the second half and ended up losing 1-4. At the end a large section of the Stoke fans invaded the pitch from the East Terrace and headed straight for the North Stand. I was taken out the ground very quickly by my uncle! Just wondered if it did all really kick off if anyone remembers?!

That was the one where a lot of them were in fancy dress as it was a relegation party. It all started ok, then the closer they got to the North Stand the more menancing they became.

In such a situation when you have a couple of thousand Stoke fans decending on you, what do you do? Do you fight? Do you run?, or do you do what most of us did that day which was to stand there and applaud them.

Totally confused the northern twats, and they started clapping back, probable good kicking avoided, so job done!

Anybody remember Port Vale at home last game of the season back in the early 90's they were getting promoted ?

Beore the game absolute carnage near Cranbourne Street by the Lamb nd Flag pub, M&S shopping trolleys being thrown. They invaded the pitch after the game and tried to get at the North Stand, a few got dragged in and got a beating thren escaped and applauded the Brighton fans

Yes we were in the west and their mob stood on the dugouts at the end of the game....it all kicked off outside the ground in New Town Road by wadham stringer that was.

I saw a vale fan take a swing at this bloke, missed and hit his wife/GF....about 20 people set about this vale fan ( they were just normal albion fans of all ages, not hoollies by any means)

Remember Ipswich away in the late 70's.....running battles from teh station to the ground and back again

Spurs 78, undoubtedly

Does anyone remember the spurs fan who got impaled climbing over the railings of one of the buildings at the end of the newtown road. The game had already kicked off, I had arrived late and as i turned the corner he was six foot in the air and stuck on the metal fence unable to move, this thick metal spike had gone right up into his groin, his mates were running around screaming for an ambulance.

Except for the Rev , who ran on and joined them ! none of us realised until someone spotted him coming back again into the North stand
