So playing in the Ecuadorian league is the same as playing in the Premier League? I guess we should sign some strikers from the Ecuadorian league.

Probably not however playing for his country and playing 25 times in the top division in his country is an indicator to his ability. S'pose that's why we want him. No?

Yes, not sure what the relevance of this is to my point about the standard of the Ecuadorian league.

Okay, I’ll explain.

Lamptey had played 1 game for Chelsea in the PL. As you say, he was training with players of first team PL standard. He had at least 2 players in front of him, who were deemed to be either better players at rightback or a better prospect in the same position. He choose to turn down a guaranteed new contract, at , presumably, a higher wage to come to us where he would be given the opportunity to compete for a first team place.

Caicedo has played 25 games for his present team in the top league in Ecuador. As you say, a lower standard than the PL, but, he is rated very highly by some very well respected judges. He has also played against very good players in his 4 international games, being rated as the best player on the park in 2 of the games against good opposition.

Training with good players is a benefit , but, no amount of training with players who are amongst the best is a substitute for playing actual games, in front of crowds, for real clubs or your country.

Do you really believe that Caicedo would come to us , knowing he would be loaned out to a second division Belgium club, a lower standard than he plays at the moment.

Again, not sure what this has to do with my point about it being a bigger step up than Lamptey. I didn't say this guy won't and can't go straight into the first team.

Added to which I believe the Ecuadorian League has a FIFA league ranking comparable to the Scottish PL, which incidentally is in the second tier of leagues in UEFA. The reason for the comparison. No one thinks twice of players transferring down from Scottish teams yet their league is as poor as Ecuador's. It also is similar to the Belgium League (standards are not too far apart). Having a look at the main players who play for the World's ranked no 1 National Team, they all started in their own league before joining better clubs in better leagues, that team being Belgium.

Do you have a link for that? I have tried to find a Fifa list before but only ever been able to find a Uefa list.

The site I usually use for rankings is based solely on mathematical algorithms (so should very much be taken with a large pinch of salt) has the Belgium league ranked 8th, SPL 15th and Ecuadorian league 74th.

I compared across a number of sites if honest however the UEFA one is here
https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/#/yr/2021

And the IFFHS ranking for Ecudorian Serie A is 13th strongest in the World (will say that was 2011 but it can't have fallen off a cliff)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuadorian_Serie_A

I believe it's hard to fully compare and it's difficult to true reflection. I think we believe that European football is of a higher standard but that's just bias. The top leagues maybe but that's purely down to money. You only have to look where most of the best players in the World come from and it's not here!

This is being mentioned in football news here now so there maybe something in it.

That it's happening or there's an issue?

I agree we can see the hand of TB the gambler in all these moves

Think focusing on the Ecuadorian league is missing the point. I think the scouts report will be based on his performance in this year's Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League. Played six times and scored two goals.

That's a bit better than SPL ( and by the way they qualified from their group.)

Tim Vickery who specialises in South American football said this about him ten days ago when the rumours were , he was headed for Man United.
He was pretty clear about his promise. Hard to compare with Lamptey - he's from Ecuador ! - but but both were 19, both are seeking regular premier league football, both are going to cost about £3-4m, and Brighton have seemingly signed them in the face of strong competition.

"Only 19. The way the market is going with South American football is the European clubs want to take them as early as possible. They are buying on promise.
"The fella Moises Caicedo is much more than promise, he is reality. He is the first player born in the 21st century to score a goal in South American World Cup qualifiers.
'Kante is his idol, he's much more than that'
"We have just lost Colin Bell and I am not saying he is as good as Bell but Moises Caicedo is in that kind of mould. He is a terrific athlete who makes football look easy. A box-to-box midfielder.
"A year ago he was saying that (N'Golo) Kante of Chelsea is his role model but he is already more than that. He already offers more in the final third.
"That kind of box-to-box midfielder that's very much in the tradition of the England game. Strong, quick, intelligent and cool. He really does look like the genuine article."
Caicedo has made 31 appearances for Independiente, scoring six goals. He made his international debut for Ecuador in October and has gone on to earn four caps since.
