Now not quite a train, but the Mrs saw Dawn French on a flight to Edinburgh and she went up to her, for some unknown mad reason, to tell her that she thought that she was excellent. But instead she said "I think your fab".

She came back to me and said that she had been ignored, and I explained why... when she said "I think your fab" it sounded very much like "I think your fat"!!

Oh the truth of it.........

Got into a taxi that Will Carling was getting out of at Kings Cross. The same with Ross Kemp at Chariing x. Sat opposite three of the stars from Heartbeat all the way to Leeds. Sat next to Rob Andrew on the way back from Newcastle. Stood next to Suggs on the district line a few years ago. Stood with Jane Torvill at Tun Wells station. See Richard E Grant now and again at Richmond station. Constantly seeing bit part actors at Waterloo.

Away from the train ... I bumped into (literally he nearly knocked me over!) Mel Smith (alas Smith and Jones) and Bob Willis (former England fast bowler) at a Bob Dylan concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1990 .. Mel Smith was really funny and out of shape, blowing hard to catch his breath!

I sat opposite Tony Greig in 1972, en route to play in a test against the Aussies, on a train to Victoria train and shared the same journey with ex-Albion hard man Paul Clarke, a few years later.

Some of the better close encounters were on planes.

Waiting at the departure gate at Washington Dulles in 1999, I was surprised to see Prince Naseem. He had fought in Detroit a few nights before. He was arguing with the United Airlines staff at the gate for ages but was, presumably, told he had to go in economy. The overnight flight was full of Americans none of whom seemed to recognise him. I stood next to the Prince in the pre-landing toilet and mini-toothbrush queue. Seems strange but it was definitely him.

In 1966 I flew with my mum from Helsinki to Heathrow and shared the plane with Herman's Hermits.

Chris Kamara at South Kensington tube after QPR beat us 2.1 in 2004, his girlfriend was very tastsy but I was very close to vomitting after drinking too much the night before. Spent most of that match in the toilet at Loftusroad - very unpleasent

I once shared the counter at the Wolves club shop with Robert Plant (lead singer of Led Zeppelin for the younger members), I was buying a programme and he was buying something for his kid.

The best one was the trip to work the morning after the Cheaterfraud game in 2001 when I shared a compartmemt with a beaming Martin Perry on his way up to yet another Falmer meeting in London.

I would have engaged him in conversation but my voice was shot to pieces......................

I waitied for a train on haywards heath station with Andy Crosby.

And in the good old days of the trips to Pissfield, we had to pick up the bus at the Black Lion in Patcham, which was also the pick up point for half the team, and we had plenty of 'interesting' conversations with Gary Hobson, Mark Ormerod, Ross Johnson and Stuart Storer until they all piled into the back of a Ford Escort for the five motorways marathon......
