As someone who watches a lot of Spanish football, if we said that of the 20 La Liga sides, they have 15 Spanish 'keepers, he'd be 16th in line. That is of course discounting some quality youngsters from the Spanish second tier - I imagine Barcelona B and Castilla have some very promising players who are essentially unproven - like Fielding.

That's just what I was thinking. Hardly a player plucked from nowhere like this thread would have you believe

There's an element of truth in that, but I don't totally agree.

There are some fine English individuals coming through, but they, and the failed generation before them, have been brought up on 'English' football, which is an inferior, superseded form of the game. As has been proved, it doesn't matter how good your players are, if the system you are playing doesn't suit your style OR it's being counter-acted by a better system, you're not going to get anywhere.

Small example, look at what Gus is doing, with (in the early days certainly) many players he inherited and had only played an 'English' way. They changed their style and outlook completely - and look at where we are now.

For me, it's more a coaching issue than a skill issue, though the latter is, of course, important.

This is a very good point actually. Gus is clearly a supreme coach and is able to look at a player and instantly judge his abilities/limitations - his signings are testiment to buying players who do specific jobs and have specific skill-sets within the style and system he plays. It is exactly what Barcelona continue to do by signing the likes of Sanchez, buying essentially more of the same to keep things fresh and ticking over. He has a winning formula based on the ethos of modern football - keeping possession, counter attacking and being extremely physically fit.

However, there is a big but - whilst England do have a few players who perhaps look like they may have the skill to break away from the mediocrity of the rest - in particular Wilshere looks a quality player and Cleverley looks very promising - for the years to come we will continue picking the likes of John Terry/Rio Ferdinand/Steven "long diagonal" Gerrard/Frank Lampard until they are carted off on wheelchairs. Terry/Ferds/Gerrard et al themselves were once very promising too and perhaps in a better side surrounded by the likes of Messi/Iniesta/Xavi/Ronaldo - truly world class players in every sense - they might have fulfilled that potential.

By the time our now-promising players are in their peak and playing every match for England, they will in turn be surrounded by mediocrity with the present day equivelent of Emile Heskey or Andy Hinchcliffe or Nicky Barmby or whatever expected to do an important role in the team, meanwhile Spain will be slotting players in as-and-when who fit immediately into their well established footballing ethos.

Frankly, it will take a revolution at grass-roots level with coaches teaching young players the values of keeping possession and not repeatedly spamming long diagonal balls for our 'speedy wingers' to chase after, before there is any change in our team's fortunes.
