One of the most bizarre innings in cricket, Root came out and made 40 off 32, why did he play so quickly if we weren’t planning on having a biff and declaring?

Lots of experts here. Root obviously backed himself to score those runs and the job of the others was to kill time. Cook just explained they are looking to have two big efforts tonight and then in the morning.

Apart from Pujara I get the impression the rest of the Indian batting line up would be more comfortable trying to be more positive, so putting them in a situation where there's no chance of getting the runs and they feel obliged to block out on a wearing pitch may be the best way to get them out quickly.

I’d have understood the two big efforts tonight and then in the morning if we’d declared when Bess got out, there was an hour left and Anderson still came out to bat

It’s all opinions isn’t it. You could argue with India completely out of the game you can go ultra attacking if necessary

Of course, the advantage here is setting attacking fields for most of the remaining play.

Not an easy task with our spinners.

not sure why they didn't go for the follow on ....detriorating pitch , get another 130 140 on to then have a go tomorrow ...?? losing Burns for naught was shabby. didn't see the rest of the day.

So much for blocking  These two can’t help themselves.

Been very disappointing from Archer and Leach so far.

I think England have been spooked by the last day miracle Pant and his India team delivered vs Australia to snatch the recent series.

Having a batsman like that makes the declaring captain chuck another 50 runs onto their lead, and thereby takes time out of the game.
