But a safe seat implies people have turned out to vote? If they don't turn out what happens?

I'm Australian if you've been paying attention...

No need to be like that, I'd actually prefer your system over here.

You've got it right.

Funnily enough I was talking to an Australian today, who was taking a similiar line. When I explained how our general electoral system worked - she changed her mind.

Understand what we've grown up with. An unelected House of Lords, MPs who we don't know from Adam forced upon us, and the chance to either Conservatives or Labour in power who simply shout at each other across the commons for the next four years.

When I was growing up in Sussex, unless you were a true blue there was absolutely no point whatsoever in getting out of bed.

I get the impression that there is huge swing from Labour to Greens going on in these elections... it's going to be interesting seeing the results.

If you voted bnp then on leaving the polling station you should of gone to your nearest war memorial and spat on it,
thats how much you have dishonoured the men who died fighting for the politics you have just voted for.

Interesting insight given that this is a European election.

I reckon the men who died fighting in WWII did so to ensure this country could determine its own future and laws.

This election is ersatz democracy as its the European Commission that construct EU law, and these legislators are all unelected. The European Parliament is there to assess these laws, however the UK have approx 10% so even if a law was completely detrimental to the UKit could still be passed.

Indeed 65 years on from WWII and this country contributes in the region of 15 billion pounds of UK taxpayers money to an institution that has not had its accounts signed off for 13 years. I wont even start on what the prevailing exchange rate means on contributions or that we are a net contributor or that the EU Constitution has been rejected 3 times by 3 different electorates yet has it gone away?

So taking all of this into consideration I think anyone who votes for a party in this election which has a policy of putting the UK first (UKIP, BNP, Libertas, Socialist Labour, No2 EU whatever) would in fact be doing a service to the brave men who fought for our freedom.

That's what I think.

Even though my grasp on history is probably a bit short of what it might be, I only got as far as the battle of Bosworth Hill at school before I lost interest and didn't take it as an option...but my understanding is that we entered WWII following the German invasion of Poland, our main aim being to end the Nazi occupation of large parts of northern Europe and to deter them from trying it on with the UK. So I suppose you are right in part, we did retain the right to determine our future and laws, rather than have them enforced on us by Nazi invaders.

Early results in the locals, only three declarations, suggests a bit of a swing to the Lib Dems...could be an interesting day!

Thats utter bollocks and you know it. A really shamefull comment

"It’s well known that the chimneys from the gas chambers at Auschwitz are fake, built after the war ended.”

Nick Griffin quoted in the Mail on Sunday 2006.

BNP are Hitler loving, holocaust denying traitors.

No, no. He only said that to appease party members. He didn't really mean it.

Or was it that he doesn't believe what he is currently saying and is only saying it to appease potential voters.

I can't remember. It is all so confusing.

John Hutton going, Labour haemorrhaging seats in the county councils - will Brown survive the weekend? Could we all be in for another vote in three weeks time - a general election???

No, I think Brown has saved his skin for now.

The only realistic chances for Labour leader, are Johnson (New cabinet post) and Milliband and they are both publically supporting him. I think this will blow over.

I would not deny that the event that triggered the British Govt declaration of war was the continued German occupation of Poland. However, and in my view, that is not to say that the British fighting men involved in WWII were fighting for Poland’s liberation.

Towards the close of 1940 Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Norway and Holland had capitulated. The Italians, Romanians, Hungarians and Bulgarians were firmly in the German camp. Japan had waded into British colonial territories in the Far East and looked unstoppable. The Russians (who had also invaded Poland from the east as part of a Russo-German pact) had pushed into Finland and were seemingly appeasing German policy in the West. The US was pursuing a non interventionist policy in Europe and had pretty much written off Britain’s ability to survive.

So in this darkest hour Britain was fighting for its very existence and alone in Europe. Those involved in this fight at this time be they British, free poles or from the Empire would have very clearly understood that they were fighting for Britain’s survival and not European liberation. That would have to wait.

Had this fight been lost Britain would have been subjugated and under foreign control. Think about that?

Britain would have had to hand over its natural resources, like the oil, gas and fishing grounds. We would have lost control of our law making ability and unable to control our borders to (say) prevent convicted rapists from other parts of Europe from roaming free around Britain.

The minutae of our everyday lives would be dictated to us by a new class of UK Quislings willing to prosecute their fellow citizens for the smallest misdemeanour, like those who may have put their bins out on the wrong day, or who did not recycle.

They would probably have introduced a public smoking ban similar to what they introduced in Germany in the 1930’s.

We would be told what light bulbs we could use and people who used British weights and measurements would lose their businesses.

We would have ID cards and be watched constantly. Those who spoke out against the new regime would be dealt with harshly with the introduction of new ‘xenophobia’ laws. The Quislings usual response will be something like ‘deal with it’.

I even expect that in London Mercedes buses would have replaced the Routemaster.

So, I stand by what I said, those fighting in WWII fought to see Britain free not dictated too by unelected foreigners.

In the local elections the Labour vote has crumbled and gone to the Lib Dems and Conservatives. In the Euro elections I predict that Labour will have lost mountains of votes nationally to UKIP , BNP and Greens in that order.

I'm sure neither would be slow off the line if he did actually quit - but I think you're right, it's now down to the backbenchers. If they get all panicky over the weekend, he could go on Monday.
