Have we ever gone into a derby game with so many injuries?

I think the Saints game is as big as Palace now, given the recent history.

Perhaps the lost generation might think that but for any long serving albion fan shirley not!

Surely any long-serving Albion fan would not be too bothered about Palace either? That's a rivalry that only dates from the mid-70s.

Bloody JCLs :)

I can only assume you forgot your medication this morning

Why, because I say thier position is immaterial? They probably considered ours in somewhat the same light last season, then came to Withdean and took all 3 points.

As for squad improvements - losing Oxlade-Chamberlain can't have been much better than us losing Bennett. Arsenal apparently rated him highly enough - yet without his services they still prosper. Perhaps team unity has been better cemented there than with our club, where odd chaps have been cropping up speaking Spanish but are not able to strengthen our squad tangibly enough to get us points on the board.

It's amazing how injuries always take longer to get over when the team arnt doing well, so much easier to sit it out than stand up and be counted. Barring Greer/El Abd and a few others, we have got a team of lightweights.........Anyway I'm quite happy to see a midfield four of --Lualua---Bridcutt---Caskey---Buckley--....personally I think that may be as good a midfield four as you could pick.
That's the spirit.

Along with that, El-Abd and Greer in the middle of defence was the dream partnership last season, AEA should be almost up to speed now. Tarricco is an upgrade on Painter, and although Cook is less of a forward threat than Calderon, he should be a more solid defender.

We'll probably end up with Sparrow, Harley, Bridcutt and Lualua as the midfield four mind :lolol:

Luck has nothing to do with our current run of form

Completely agree. Its not luck thats making ankergren concede sloppy goals or cms missing guilt edged chances you expect a 2.5m striker to finish, or luck that makes harley a) disappear or b) deliver set pieces like dean cox even tho he is a specialist.

Or luck that picks Billy f***ing paynter and plays him.

There must be an age thing happening here. I can't imagine why anyone would say the Saints game comes anywhere near Palace. It's an utterly ridiculous thing for anyone who has been supporting the club for longer than a year to say.

Definitely this - it's 67 miles away!

Walsall played Sheffield Weds on Boxing Day - Walsall is about the same distance from Sheffield as Southampton is from Brighton but you'd have have got some very strange looks from Weds fans if you'd called it a derby game.

How much does distance play a part? After all Palace is over 40 miles away and they have plenty of clubs nearer to them.

As for your Walsall example; Nottingham is the same distance from Walsall as Palace is to Brighton. Could you suggest Walsall and Forest is a derby?

According to wiki a derby is a sporting fixture between two rivals, albeit generally local.

It's a fair point but there are special circumstances with Brighton due to the lack of alternatives. Until Crawley came into the league, Palace was our nearest club so there's some rationale for calling it a derby game.

Strictly speaking, a derby game should be really local - or at the most, 20 miles away, but some clubs would have problems with that. You could take Plymouth and Exeter as an example - they would see their games as local derbies but they're about the same distance as Palace and Brighton too.

But even with the special circumstances of Brighton's geographic position, I can't see that a team 67 miles away is a derby match.

Up north you have some big games/derbies/rivalries: Man U/Leeds, Man U/Liverpool. Where does the City game rank? And are the Leeds and Liverpool games derbies?

It's confusing. For us clearly Palace is the game. I only see the Saints and Pompey as games with a bit of extra spice.

The leeds/man utd is from the revie days. Liv/man u is from thedays when they were the two biggest clubs in the land that won everything in the 70's and 80's it was liv league and man utd the cup.

Not sure on leeds liv but again that would be a revie thing when leeds were the new kids on the block challenging man u ans liv for trophies.
