Great debut albums followed by crap

Mansun, Attack Of The Grey Lantern was blinding, all set up for them to go forth and dominate... then Six was, well, if not entirely bad, just a but embarrassingly over-wrought and frustrating... and never going to catch on much...

As for the Manics, some great great songs on the first album but took against a few of the too-anthemic blusterthons, same with Gold Against The Soul - again, the top tunes more than made up for the duffers.
But The Holy Bible is just stunning, that and Parklife the best albums of the 90s, no comparison - though, er, in very different ways, of course...
Loved Everything Must Go, too, and thought Know Your Enemy and Lifeblood were well underrated - have been relistening and reconsidering Lifeblood a lot lately, very chilled-out and lovely...
Tell Me Your Truth, however, is by far my least favourite... Everlasting, Nobody Loved You and You Stole The Sun aside, it's just a bit too turgid...

Mind you, in its favour, it has at least indirectly given us the suddenly-topical-again song:
"If you tolerate Rix, then your children will be next..."

i never forgave them for abandoning their strong political views that they expressed in their first album

For me, it all started to go sour when they posed in football kits for 90 Minutes...

All looked very nice, but only the lovely Baby looked good in a Spurs shirt, and at least you could understand the earnest Sporty in a Pool top... But the others' hearts didn't look in it - Ginger in a Watford kit, with no clue...
Somehow can't remember whose Posh wore, but am fairly sure it wasn't United....

Any-----way.......

I've got plenty of duff second albums in my collection from punk days (The Jam, The Clash) to more modern beat combos (Portishead, Alabama 3).

The most disappointing for me was an American band called Neutral Milk Hotel (really) whose first album is absolutely superb - in my top 20 of all time - and whose second sounds so bad that I'd rather have my balls rubber with a cheese grater than listen to it again.

Definitely Maybe pisses all over What's the Story? - everyone knows that.

The Portishead second album was a real disappointment - not so much bad, just boring...

The Jam, though - thought the first two albums were pretty shoddy, the odd couple of tracks aside (I Got By In Time, The Modern World, I Need You), they were more the opposite - the later albums well and truly trounced the first few attempts...

On the other hand, loved both Clash albums one and two, feel more 'meh' about those that followed...

Definitely Maybe - every Oasis album since has contained progressively more filler, less killer

Totally agree. I found their new CD virtually unlistenable. Layla just gave me a headache.

Unbelievable!;) They were shite full stop, and with a signature like that you need to be getting yourself along to the Brixton Academy on 20/21st December.

EMF, who's hit includes.

Athlete? Really enjoyed their first, but their new stuff sounds @rse...

Wouldn't call Tourist crap but certainly had a lot less decent tunes than Vehicles and Animals. No-one really discovered them until Wires. I was expecting more people to go back and pick up the debut album, but it hasn't re-charted that I know of. Shame, it's a gem!

Shane can't even stand up for two songs these days, it would be a travesty to see a once fine looking and sounding man be a travesty of himself just to pick up some more beer vouchers.

To be honest, he was rarely able to stand up for two songs in his prime 20 years ago either. Pogues gigs were always hit and miss affairs depending on which Shane turned up. They could be brilliant (Brixton Academy, Paddy's Day 1987), or they could be a cacophonous shambolic rabble (Hammersmith, Paddy's Day 1986).

It always amazes me every time I read that shane is still alive.

Cheers for that. I like the first one, shan't bother with the follow up!

Again it doesn't count if the first album was absolute crap as well.

I was waiting for that reply . . . you have to take it in contecxt, they never set out to win the Guardian beardy award for originality, artistic merit and obscurity . . . just to have a god time and make music. its all most other bands do.
