Good teams pull defensive teams all over the place, and eventually they'll create chances and break through.

However, England are an ordinary team with THICK players.

Are we off again, you KNOW that is an inflammatory statement :lolol:

well yes it is an inflammatory 'fishing' comment which I obviously disagree completely with (the 'ordinary' bit) and could easily use facts such as demolishing Croatia twice to point out England aren't an ordinary team with thick players but what use are facts in this discussion - usually not a lot of use - it's opinions. I hate discussing England with some on here asI hold a different view to most so best just to let it go IMO...

You'd set up a counter-attacking formation against a team that set out to defend and pulled 10 men back behind the ball ?

Blimey, that would have been a spectacle. Would either team have left their own half ?

NO NO NO NO NO. They were saying this on ITV as well. He he hit some very accurate long passes? Yes. Were they effective? Generally no. Hitting a 60 yard pass is all very well and good, but it's bloody hard to bring down and control a 60 yard pass that's been absolutely tonked at you. As a result, the player receiving the pass often immediately loses the ball (especially if, as Johnson and Young often were, he was being double marked). I'd much MUCH rather see us keep the ball on the floor and play short incisive passes forward for wingers/strikers to run on to than massive swirling passes.QUOTE]

Good post.

Another thing regards Gerrard.

With Lampard out of the side he can now play in the centre, in a attacking role. He is playing against a side with no attacking intent themselves, and has a holding midfielder (Barry) to tidy up.

So why the hell is he playing so deep and taking the ball off Ferdinand's feet?

Secondly, why the hell are Capello, & Ferdinand, as captain, not telling him to play 40 yards further up the pitch?

Last night England were crying out for a player like David Beckham who could pose a dead-ball threat. Our corners and free kicks were shit.

Instead of bringing on Davies we needed to push Gerrard up just off Rooney and bring on a holding midfielder. Unfortunately, that option wasn't even on the bench.

The lack of crosses negated Crouch while the deeper roll negated Gerrard. That simply leaves Rooney as the goal threat, and for a combination of reasons he's been shit for months.

Even Joe Cole would have given the Montenegrans something to think about.

Oh, and Gareth Barry was abysmal.

I agree with the notion that this is the most ordinary England side since the mid-90s.

Apart from a mauling or two of Croatia, there is not much to crow about in the last five years. Blue denotes our victories, but there is a lot of ordinary teams that we have beaten along the way. When it comes to playing a decent side, we invariably lose or certainly do not win.

We missed Lamps on Tuesday night, penetrating late runs from midfield and a threat of a goal.

I don't subscribe to the fact we're ordinary, where are we in the rankings 6th?? That seems about right to me, Tuesday was a bad night at the office but I've seen enough encouragement from the previous results to suggest we will qualify for the promised land of Poland and Ukraine 2012. I am however very concerned about the form of Wazza, his return to last seasons form can only come soon enough.
