The joke shop and post office (next door) at the bottom of St. James street.

There were two businesses named 'The Cottage'.
The record shop opposite The Dome on Church Rd, and then there was a tiny restaurant that stayed open after the pubs shut, just East of The Laines.

I'd love to peek back in time at some of the stock the second-hand record-shop had in their bins, now.

The Laines? Which one? There were five.

Very glad someone pinged him on that...the out of towners Lane/Laine confusion? Tsk NMH. You'll be calling the Lanes the (and apologies for any offence cause) "South Lanes" next.

There is a joke shop / newsagents on Western Road right at the junction with Brunswick Place. It's FANTASTIC.

How on earth can or did joke shops ever, ever make any money? Was there ever really such brisk demand for plastic noses, clockwork handbuzzers and stink bombs in the 1970s?

The fantastic Ghost Train and the House Of Hades, (later the Nutt House!), both on the Palace Pier, and both sadly removed by the Nobel Organisation.

The boating lake on the seafront near the west Pier.

The games room, with Bar Billiards etc, in the Bath Arms.

The Kingfisher cafe opposite Hove Library.

Am I the only one to remember the The Starlight Rooms at the bottom of Montpelier Road?

trigger..

My Mrs( Ex Plymouth Ave L Bevendean) didnt think the 11 and 12 were blue busses even though that picture is definately a blue one!

I was a Plymouth Ave boy for nearly 17 years..

No, Bodium is up the far end of the valley. In regards to your other comments, the 12 did not serve Lower bev but Seaford. It's the 1 & 11 that did Bev and, before them, 110 & 111.

Little Typo, sure you meant - 10 and 11 - (same route in Lwr Bev, but one used start up Norwich drive, and other Auckland Drive, then swap over.)

re buses, I thought the 10 & 11 served lower bev?

Ya right.

The 67 Centre -
Melford, E and A, Coombe Rovers and Hollingbury Hawks

67 Center - how odd. My mum used to take us over the hill from Lwr Bev, and never understand my ' But mum it's s'coombe do we have to..?'

Melford - played with Gary Bollingbroke, Roland ward, and Richard Lacey years ago - Bev Barcelona were miles better mind, just not as hard..!

What about the Marble shop in the Laines off North Street ?

'Rain's' on seafront - one of the first supper licenses - plate of chips and keep drinking till 2am.

Cocoa Cola football skills during summer holidays at Withdean.
You had to keep up ball for 15 times with different body parts each time, and place dead ball kicks with left and right feet in small goal type area's..

Got my gold badge, and thought i was going to make it big time..got as far as Melford..

Flying down Braybon Avenue in my dads car as a kid at speed over the bump half way down - him driving trying to get a cheap rollercoaster thrill for us kids

Patcham Boxing Club.

Hollinbury Hawks. Hove Park Colts. Mr Barker - legend.

Watching Rugby and cricket at Horsdean - seeing Tony Greg (who you ask - philistine).

Kids Talent show at Hove seafront.

The old tower at Fawcett - not sure what it was but you could climb up inside it.

Seeing the Chattri from School.

The guy who used to wave at you if you tooted him by the bridge in Tongdean Lane or The Deneway - not sure if he was in a chair or Downs - but cheered us up when he waved back.

Chips served in a cone - vinegar packed in the bottom.
Also onion vinegar seems to be a fond memory and a speciality of Brighton Chippies - not seen elsewhere.

I will think of some more!!!

Ah, right, cheers. Glad somebody else remembers. Wonder if all the fixtures and fittings are still there gathering dust for a future Time Team Special?

I recall Po Na Na tried to get a license for it a few years back as well.

Skinny dipping on the beach by the palace pier.

Kenya boy's cafe, bottom of Islingword Road.

American Express social club losing it's license (or rather, the manager forgot to renew it, so for a couple of weeks it could only sell soft drinks)

The riot in shades, around 1987/8.

Silver ring boxing club used to put their shows on in this hall at the race course. Does anyone know if they still do that ? Or even if the silver ring boxing club still exists ? Going back to late 70's early 80's here.[/QUOTE

There is a new boxing club there now

leisureboxer.co.uk Online

Silver ring went several years ago but the tradition is carrying on with a boxing gym and stable lads boxing matches plus the corporate side.
