After electricial storms i have known people to blame a power surge for frying there old pcs(scam)on there old for new policy. They obviously tampered with it first in one way or another

My house took a direct lightening strike about 4 years ago. It wasn't until the evening when I got home from work that I tried to use my dial-up modem and it wouldn't work. Went to use the cordless phone and that didn't work either. Nipped next door and neighbour said his phone was fine. Coming back, I noticed fragments of what looked like brick on the front lawn, had a good look around and up and noticed a hole through my roof

The strike had also buggered the video and the laptop modem card (but not the PC or modem itself) as well as the cordless phone and my main external modem.

So I can concur with first-hand experience that electrical storms can and do trash PC kit (well modems anyway)

Re getting burgled.

Haven't yet got it myself but I reckon indoor CCTV with hidden/discuised cameras is the best way of catching these little runts - get their faces on crime-watch I say ....

This type of DIY kit is quite cheap now ....

But going by the normal make up of criminals on crimewatch you'll only see their eyes or teeth if they smile.

Insurance companies are wise to cheats like that. You have to produce receipts/instructions for the stuff that was stolen and if you can't then it doesn't get replaced.

no you dont!

Insurance co's realise not everyone has receipts! what if it was a present?

Again Yorkie giving out crap advice!

Have you had first hand experience of this?
I have been burgled 5 times in total. I have been insured with three different insurance companies. They ask for receipts or photos of the objects.

So if you are given a nice present then take a photo of it.

You don't have to read my crap posts :p

bhanutz,

Did you just accuse Yorkie of "again" giving out crap advice? Have you got an example of her crap advice, as I'd very much like to see it! Yorks gives the best advice on here by a mile, FACT.

Besides, if someone is trying to help out another, labelling what there saying as "crap" is a tad harsh isn't it.

When my garage was turned over (losing my bicycle power tools and other goodies) because of the high value of the claim the insurance sent out a loss adjuster who went through every item one by one. Basically wanting proof of owning any thing with an individual value of£10 or more. Only sundry items like screwdivers hammers and such were accepted without proof but only after extensive proof of the validity of the rest of my claim.

This is what I have been trying to tell them darling, but maybe they'll believe it from you.

Our house got robbed last year whilst we were on holiday. I think they were gutted as there was not a lot worth taking. They didn't even touch our porno collection :D

Sorry to hear your news, TLO.

We got burgled by gays when I lived in Beaconsfield Villas; they didn't actually steal anything but they'd hoovered and left a quiche in the oven. Very unnerving!

Seriously though, it's a real kick in the guts and we ended up moving as well as couldn't stay there. Hope you have a happy ending.

I have to warn you mate - HE WILL BE BACK FOR MORE.

They always come back - and it'll be when you aren't expecting it.

Bear traps? ???
We have thought of that. We're going to be making the flat a damn sight more secure than it was, so getting in (or out) will be pretty hard work - at least hard enough for them not to be seen or for them not to bother.

The school, however, is a different beast. We may consider toughened glass, or overnight security grills (as opposed to permanent bars). Would be quite interested to hear what the Crime Prevention Officer has to say.

Sorry to hear about this TLO.

I think the two worst things is the invasion of privacy and the sentimental items that go missing.

Thing is not to work yourself into a siege mentality. Toughened glass for the flat, sure, but I'd doubt the guy would be overly interested in robbing stuff out of the school.

If you're interested, I've got - still in the packet - a full set of stickers and liquidy kind of magic marker pens provided by the local police (they came knocking round our street a year or two back). It's called 'SMART WATER'. Theory is that the liquid has some sort of bar code embedded that ties your valuables back to you under infra-red or possibly ultra-violet light. You just scrawl with the pen over your valuables most likely to be nicked and the police can trace it right back to you because they hold the same bar code info that ties the stuff back to your address. And you just KNOW that if they come back, it'll be for the video and the telly. So might be good to ask the police about the SMART WATER thing. But fingers crossed they don't come back. Take care.
