Evans Cycles | Specialized Centrum Sport 2008 Hybrid Bike | Online Bike Shop

It is a single speed though, you will get fit pretty quick riding Brighton's hills on that. Same for the Trek.

If i ever get buckled wheel or need a chain replacing, i always go to Holloway Cycles. I know you won't bother going all that way, but it's worth finding a semi-specialist shop full of people who love bikes and don't want you to die and actually seem to have enough time to listen to your stories if you've got one. I saw one of the main guys there the other day teaching children to cross the road safely. A bloody saint that man, and he always smiles me a sweet hello when the bell on the shopdoor auto-rings when i bustle in.

After Wes Brown finally does screw us over, I might have, as my signature:-

'When buying a bike from halfords, the 1st thing you should do is wheel the bike to a Local Bike Shop and ask for a service'. (I guess I could make it a bit pithier).

As it is my mantra re bikes on here.

£300 is just about scraping into the bottom bracket of entry level bikes.
Test and try see what bike has the shape to fit you.
You should be able to 'just tell' when sat on the right one, there's enough variation even at that level, to know the one that fits.

The Carrera Subway 2 is a good bike (mine is 5 years old with 1 puncture).
Plus the Boardman range has the best spec for the money.

I took my bike into Halfords (Giant Mountain bike purchased somewhere else) for a couple of minor repairs one of which was gears slipping. After 3 trips back they advised that they had put wrong parts on and would have to change the frame to another make of bike to get the right parts to work.

As I used the bike everyday I agreed as I just wanted it back but after a couple of days the pedals feel off of the new bike. I phoned the store warning them of my arrival and nearly throw it through the window in anger.

As there was no managers around I left it there and typed up a letter to there Head Office. Next day the store manager rung me and asked what I wanted so I said a brand new bike to the value of my Giant (which was six years old). They agreed a gave me a new Kona worth £400.

So maybe try the complaint letter route stressing your obvious anger disgust etc and your inconvenience blah blah blah

I hate to defend what is without a doubt the worst shop in the whole goddam world with the least educated and knowledgeable staff....But... the Boardman bikes are brilliant. Better value than anything else on the market.

God only knows why Boardman chose to sell through Halfords.

However, having said that, a letter to the chief executive complaining about it might bear fruit - these blokes sit in plush offices all day with arse-lickers telling them how great they are and to get a real letter from a real person telling them they are shite, can work wonders. Don't be rude about the people, just how poor the product is, how you nearly died because of it's failure to perform; question their ethics in so far as rather than scrap a clearly defective bike, they heavily discounted it in order to fleece some poor gullible punter into buying it, that sort of thing.
Nice idea in theory, but I would think the chances of anyone high-up actually seeing a letter from Joe Public is absolutely zero. A secretary or PA would open it and bouce it down to some sort of service dept.

That's what people think, but CEOs often read their own mail and most DO take an interest, even if the do give it to one of thier underlings to deal with. I've had results on several occasions by writing to the head shed direct.

I wrote to the Chairman of British Telecom once complaining about BT's poor customer service and an unwarranted charge and I got a letter back apologising and a full refund.

Wow cheers Al, I was thinking about getting a bike and just did the calculator and can get 41% off a bike!!

so a 500 quid bike for £24 per month over 12 months!

Problem is I got nowhere to keep it atm

You can get a bike and accessories up to the value of £1000, all discounted, so don't forget to get a helmet, lights and a good lock at the same time.

It has to be done through your company.
