It was indeed. The original was by Gloria Jones in 1965.

IMO the best cover was Marvin Gaye's version of "I heard it through the Grapevine "

Abraham Martin and John by Marvin is sublime, it's a soul treasure.

The Isleys 'Summer Breeze' wasn't too shabby as a version of the Seals and Crofts tune. They did a decent song there themselves, so it was hard to beat.

Darkness Darkness (Youngbloods) covered by Iain Matthews is excellent.

Can't forget 'Jealous Guy' by Roxy Music - beautiful version.

Marvin Gaye was a genius. Unfortunately a very troubled genius.
Quite. A post which belongs in the soul music thread, but 'What's Going On' is, for me, the perfect album.

Every aspect of every song is perfectly considered, every nuance is inspired, every note's inclusion is fully justified, and the whole tone breathtaking. A fulfilled album which has yet to be beaten on so many levels - musically, politically, socially, spiritually and emotionally.

Just my opinion, like. :)

John Kongos rumbling fuzzed-out masterpiece rules hard over the disco dolly-harmonized slacker manky Mondays version.

Have to agree with this. The Kongos track is a minor masterpiece.

There are so many great covers, loads have been mentioned so far: Cale's Heartbreak Hotel (and his Pablo Picasso) are great. Hendrix's Watchtower; Patti Smith's Gloria and Iggy's Louie, Louie are right up there. But my favourite two are Toots and the Maytals' take on Take me home, country roads; this sounded like a dirge when Olivia Neutron Bomb recorded it but Toots brings out all the hidden joy in the song.

My absolute fave has to be John Coltrane's version of Rogers and Hammerstein's Favourite Things. Coltrane takes the schmaltz-fest to several dark places, kicks it around a bit and finally brings us back to the tune: sheer genius.

Alison Krauss and Union Station - When you say nothing at all (pisses all over Ronan Keating).

Still not as good as the original though.

Gloria by Patti Smith is just fantastic, where as her version of My Generation wasn't very good. Incidently, anyone remember Birdland's version of Rock and Roll ******? (bit of a post in honour of the great lady there!)

Fortunately, I haven't heard that but Simply Red's version of Money's too tight to mention is absolutely the pits.

They also did excellent covers of Jolene and 1969.

Though I have to give it to Sir Johnny of Cash for Hurt and Personal Jesus.

Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil is also excellent

The worst cover ever done is "Comfortably Numb" by the "Scissor Sisters". What a load of codswallop.

When I first heard this, as a Pink Floyd, I would've agreed with you - butchered I thought. After a while it did grow on me, for the reason that a good cover should be interesting and to maybe take it in a new musical direction and I did think they did this.

The rest of their stuff has been dire though IMO!

As well as 'Hurt' and 'All Along the Watchtower', I would like to throw the Futureheads version of Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love' into the mix as a great cover.

Worst, probably anything that Carey has murdered
